Resilient bottom line with high cushion

Post analyst meeting, we maintain BBL as Outperform and raise TP to Bt170 from Bt167 on the back of cheap valuation and a resilient bottom line. We raise our 2025F by 3%, adjusting our assumption for investment gain. We see its bottom line as quite resilient from cost control and investment gains and as the only bank with loan growth. Dividend yield is inferior to peers due to its conservative stand.

More NPL relapses in 3Q25, but manageable with full ECL. BBL expects to see a further relapse of restructured loans into NPLs in 3Q25 from international loans in western zone, as signaled by a slippage into stage 2 loans in 2Q25. However, these loans have sufficient collateral and ECL. In 1H25, BBL saw a 23% rise in NPLs from a relapse of large and medium sized corporates across a wide spectrum of sectors. The bank expects these relapsed NPLs to be declassified later after complying with the new debt restructuring terms. BBL does not expect customers exposed to the trade war to turn into NPLs as they are large corporations that are financially solid and resilient enough to withstand the headwinds. BBL has the highest cushion against headwinds with LLR coverage of 284%. BBL expects ECL in 2025 to be the same as 2024. It expects HoH ease in ECL in 2H25 after front-loading in 1H25. We raise our 2025F credit cost by 5 bps to 1.35% (+5 bps), as we expect it to add management overlay to cover uncertainties.

Only bank with loan growth. BBL maintains its 2025 loan growth target of 3-4%, seeing loan growth opportunities in ASEAN as still high. We maintain our 2025F loan growth at 2% vs 0.7% YTD in 1H25.

Raise non-NII forecast on gains. Falling bond yield, particularly with an inverted yield curve offers an opportunity for larger FVTPL and investment gains. The gains lead us to raise our 2025F non-NII growth to 20% from 15%.

Better cost to income ratio than targeted. BBL expects 2025 cost to income ratio to be slightly better than its guidance of a high 40%, reflecting cost controls and better toplines (FVTPL gain) than expected. We lower our 2025F cost to income ratio to 48% from 49%.

Sustainable DPS with low upside. BBL committed to keeping DPS at Bt8.5 (37% payout), equivalent to 5.8%. It insists it will maintain dividend payout at 30-40%.

Raise 2025F earnings. We raise our 2025F earnings by 3%, adjusting our FVTPL and investment gain assumption. We now forecast a shrinkage of 3% in 2025F earnings, with 2% loan growth, a 22 bps squeeze in NIM, a 5 bps rise in credit cost, a 20% rise in non-NII and stable cost to income ratio. We expect earnings to fall QoQ and YoY in 3Q25 and 4Q25 on a further narrowing in NIM and lower FVTPL and investment gains.

Maintain Outperform with a TP hike. We maintain Outperform on BBL with a hike in TP to Bt170 (based on 0.55x PBV) from Bt167 as it has the sector’s cheapest valuation at 0.48x PBV and 6.4x PE on 2025.

Key risks: 1) Asset quality risk from an economic slowdown and the trade war, 2) NIM risk from interest rate cuts, 3) slower-than-expected loan growth from sluggish loan demand and 4) ESG risk from market conduct.
