1Q25 core profit was Bt1.8bn, turning from a core loss of Bt126mn in 1Q24 and +90% QoQ, slightly above estimates on gross margin. We expect 2Q25F core profit to grow YoY and QoQ on higher local swine prices from tight supply amid lower feed costs as is already being seen in 2Q25TD. We raise our 2025F by 15%, factoring in a wider gross margin. We stay Outperform with a new end-2025 SOTP TP of Bt28.5 (from Bt27.5) based on PE of 6.5-8.5x for feed, farm and food units.
1Q25 net profit was Bt1.9bn, turning from a net loss of Bt124mn and +93% QoQ, 10-15% above estimates on a Bt77mn one-off gain and wider gross margin than expected. 1Q25 core profit was Bt1.8bn, turning from a core loss of Bt126mn in 1Q24 but +90% QoQ, backed by higher sales, a wider gross margin and controlled SG&A/sales.
1Q25 highlights. Sales grew 12% YoY: 8% YoY from a rise in sales volume via capacity expansion and the rest from higher prices. By segment, sales grew in the food and protein unit (65% of sales; +15% YoY) off higher local swine prices and more broiler exports, in the international unit (8% of sales, +60% YoY) from acquisition of an egg business in Singapore in Jan, better prices and sales volume, and in the pet food unit (2% of sales, +7% YoY) on higher sales volume in new modern trade and online channels. Gross margin widened to 17.7% (vs 10.8% in 1Q24 and 14.9% in 4Q24) on better livestock product prices amid low feed costs and a more favorable sales mix in the food and protein unit (portion of high-margin exports and food service sales to total segment sales rising to 26.9% in 1Q25 from 26% in 1Q24) and the international unit (high gross margin of 25% at its new egg business in Singapore, more high-margin pork and chicken meat sales replacing livestock sales and better livestock prices amid lower feed costs).
Key takeaway from meeting. Livestock price. In 2Q25TD, local swine price has risen to Bt87/kg (+26% YoY, +10% QoQ) and local broiler price is Bt41/kg (-7% YoY, +2% QoQ). BTG expects local swine price to stay high for at least the next six months on tight supply from the recent spread of ASF disease in late 2024 to early 2025 resulting in lower local pig supply estimated at slightly above 20mn (vs 21mn earlier) in 2025. Its broiler export sales volume will continue to improve in 2Q25 in Europe and the UK but grow slowly in Japan. Feed cost. In 2Q25TD, spot imported soybean meal and local corn price is down to Bt16.3/kg (-23% YoY, -3% QoQ) and Bt10.4/kg (-5% YoY, -5% QoQ). BTG expects to realize the benefit of low feed costs for at least the next six months, as local corn cost is expected to stay low from good crop conditions and it has already locked in low imported soybean meal prices throughout the period. If the Thai government can negotiate with the US for import of cheaper US corn and soybean meal to cover the Thai production shortfall, BTG roughly estimates this will cut its actual feed costs by 7-8%. 2025 targets. With higher prices amid lower costs in 1Q25TD, BTG expects 2025F to beat targets set early this year. At that time, it targeted sales growth of 3-7% YoY on capacity expansion, gross margin at 13.5-15% (vs 13.5% in 2024) with a better local swine business from lower feed costs amid stable or better prices and more high-margin products or sales channels and SG&A/sales at 10-11% (vs 10.5% in 2024).
Key risks are lower demand and prices from fragile economies and more supply, and higher feed costs. Key ESG risks are GHG emission, waste & water management (E), customer welfare, product quality management, health & safety policies (S).
