Discretionary: Improving SSS, wider margin in 2Q26

Following our consumer discretionary event on May 22, we observed positive SSS momentum across the sector with a healthy margin outlook in 2Q26F. SSS rebounded in 2Q26TD, supported by price adjustments, weather-driven demand, and earlier stockpiling amid price increases, although growth momentum softened slightly in May as prices normalized MoM. In 2Q26F, gross margins are set to continue expanding YoY, driven by price adjustments, high inventory buffers, and more private-label sales. Despite rising transportation costs, inflationary pressures remain manageable as most operators are able to pass through costs effectively. Our Picks are GLOBAL & HMPRO.

SSS in 2Q26TD. In the consumer discretionary sector, SSS showed a clear recovery across players in 2Q26TD following a weak performance in 1Q26. CRC reported SSS turning positive at 2% YoY growth (from -2% YoY in 1Q26), driven by growth in food and hardline segments despite fading stockpiling effects in May to date. Similarly, DOHOME (+3.5% YoY in 2Q26TD vs -4% YoY in 1Q26), HMPRO (HomePro +1% YoY and MegaHome +3% YoY in 2Q26TD vs -12.7% YoY and -3.7% YoY in 1Q26), and GLOBAL (+2% YoY in April vs -2.8% YoY in 1Q26) all recorded improvement. This was backed by price increases, weather-driven demand (particularly for cooling appliances), and temporary stockpiling during price increases. However, growth softened slightly in May as stockpiling effects waned, prices normalized MoM, and heavy rains affected traffic.

Better 2Q26F margin. Gross margin is expected to widen YoY in 2Q26F across the sector. CRC anticipates continued margin expansion, supported by better product mix in food, recovery in fashion margins after the completion of 2025’s inventory clearance, and pricing alignment in hardline. Other retailers (GLOBAL, DOHOME, HMPRO) also benefit from strategic levers such as a higher proportion of private-label products, selling price adjustments, and relatively high inventory buffers (3–6 months), which enable margin protection amid cost volatility. All operators reported no supply shortages and continue to maintain inventory levels at normal ranges, in line with previous periods.

Limited impact from inflationary cost increases. The impact of cost inflation - primarily from higher oil and electricity prices - remains manageable. Transportation cost increases are expected to have a low single-digit impact on sector costs, with the net effect further mitigated by effective strategies such as passing through costs to suppliers and customers, adjusting product prices and delivery fees, and increasing minimum order thresholds for free delivery. The slight rise in Ft rates for May–August (+2% vs. January–April) is expected to have only a marginal impact on electricity expenses. In addition, most operators are adopting renewable energy solutions, such as solar panels and battery systems, to mitigate cost pressures. Overall, despite ongoing inflationary pressures, discretionary players have demonstrated strong ability to absorb or offset these increases, limiting downside risk to margins in 2Q26F.

Top picks: GLOBAL, HMPRO. We expect the improvement in sales and margin to support consumer discretionary earnings growth YoY, except for CRC from the absence of profit contribution from Rinascente as in 2Q25 (30% of 2Q25 profit), after divesting it in 4Q25. GLOBAL and HMPRO are our picks, backed by their solid earnings growth in 2Q26F (up YoY), with earnings upside from GLOBAL from a wider margin YTD and the sector’s most attractive valuation and dividend yield from HMPRO.
