2Q25: Slightly above estimates on margin
CPALL’s 2Q25 core profit was Bt7bn, +14% YoY but -7% QoQ, the sector’s best growth YoY, and 4% above estimates on a wider CVS margin than expected. In 3Q25TD, we believe SSS in the CVS unit is flat YoY (vs -0.8% YoY in 2Q25) on more normal weather YoY. We expect 3Q25F earnings to continue to grow YoY on better CVS sales and margin and higher contribution from CPAXT on synergy from amalgamation. CPALL is now trading at 14.5x 2025PE (sector’s lowest) despite showing more outstanding growth compared to peers in 2025-26F. We maintain Outperform with a new mid-2026 DCF TP (WACC 7.3%, LT growth 1.5%) of Bt63 (from Bt62 at end-2025).
2Q25 net profit in line at Bt6.8bn, +9% YoY but -11% QoQ. Excluding one-off FX loss of Bt237mn, 2Q25 core profit was Bt7bn, +14% YoY but -7% QoQ, 4% above estimates on a better CVS margin than expected. Of 2Q25 growth of 14% YoY, 13% came from improvement at CVS, with higher sales and margin, and 1% from higher CPAXT profit on better sales amid a stable EBIT margin (+5% YoY, 60% stake held by CPALL).
CVS highlights: SSS fell 0.8% YoY as weather curbed mobility within the country, coupled with fewer foreign tourists. Customer average was 966/store/day (-4% YoY) and spending per ticket was Bt88 (+3.5% YoY). O2O sales portion to total sales was 11%, flat YoY and QoQ. Of total sales, 76.4% was food products [+10bps YoY, thanks to higher sales of new ready-to-eat (RTE) meals of baked sandwiches, fruit, and dessert, that outpaced lower beverage sales from less favorable weather] and 23.6% from non-food products. In 2Q25, CPALL added 165 stores in Thailand, giving it a net 15,595 stores at end-2Q25, +5% YoY and +1% QoQ; it added 10 stores overseas, giving it a net 141 stores overseas, +52% YoY and +8% QoQ, consisting of 123 in Cambodia and 18 in Laos. Gross margin on CVS unit widened 30bps YoY, driven by 1) better margin from promotional campaigns arranged with suppliers; 2) higher product mix margin (+10bps YoY to 27.8%) off a higher food margin (+10bps YoY on more high-margin RTE sales) and higher non-food margin (+30bps YoY on more high-margin personal care, healthcare and household product sales). SG&A/sales was flat YoY, with higher store expansion expenses offsetting controlled utilities expenses.
CPAXT highlights. CPAXT 2Q25 core profit was Bt2.3bn, +5% YoY but -14% QoQ. The rise YoY came from higher sales (store expansion, amid SSS at -1.2% YoY and flat YoY from B2B & B2C units) amid a stable EBIT margin as a wider margin from synergy (+50bps YoY; 28% of its 2025 synergy achieved in 2Q25 vs 23% in 1Q25) outstripped the narrower organic margin (-50bps YoY). The drop QoQ was seasonal.
3Q25 outlook. In 3Q25TD, we believe SSS in the CVS unit has improved slightly to be flat YoY (vs -0.8% YoY in 2Q25) as weather patterns return to normal YoY, plus slightly better local tourists from government stimulus amid continued lower foreign tourists. We expect 3Q25F earnings to be stable QoQ on seasonality but continue to grow YoY on better CVS sales and margin and more contribution from CPAXT on greater synergy.
Share repurchase program to support price downside. CPALL announced a share repurchase program running from May 16 to November 14, with a total share repurchase of up to 150mn shares (1.67% of total shares) for up to Bt7.5bn. So far, it has repurchased 39mn shares (26% of targeted repurchased shares) worth Bt1.8bn, at an average price of Bt47/share, with more to come that will further shield against price downside.
