2Q26F: Solid core profit; favor BCP in 2H26
Thai oil refinery sector remains supported by strong fundamentals, with all four refiners expected to deliver robust 2Q26F core earnings on exceptionally high GRM and strong middle-distillate cracks. However, reported earnings are likely to diverge due to inventory gains and losses. Refinery stocks have significantly outperformed, rising 34% over the past month, vs. +5% of SET and +13% of SETENERG, reflecting improving earnings expectations. We remain constructive on the 2H26 outlook, supported by healthy refining margins, while favoring BCP for its diversified earnings base and turning more positive on SPRC following operational improvements.
2Q26F preview: strong core, net earnings diverge on inventory effects. All four refiners are expected to report strong underlying performance in 2Q26F, supported by exceptionally high market GRM, tight middle-distillate supply, and strong jet fuel and diesel cracks. However, net earnings will diverge due to inventory effects. BCP should deliver the strongest improvement, driven by robust GRM, higher marketing margins, and diversified earnings despite lower refinery runs. SPRC is also expected to post solid results, supported by throughput recovery after its turnaround and an improved refinery configuration. In contrast, IRPC and TOP may see QoQ earnings declines as inventory losses outweigh stronger operating margins. The government restrictions on refined product exports remain a key headwind, limiting throughput and inventory management flexibility.
Refining outlook remains constructive despite softer July GRM. Singapore GRM in July remained favorable at US$23.4/bbl, down slightly from US$24.3/bbl in 2Q26. This was supported by strong diesel and jet fuel crack spreads of more than US$60/bbl on average. We expect the refining outlook to remain constructive in 2H26, supported by tight regional middle-distillate balances, healthy aviation demand, and limited new capacity additions in Asia. While diesel and jet fuel cracks are expected to moderate from the exceptional levels seen in 2Q26, regional GRM should remain above historical averages, supporting strong profitability. TOP, BCP, and SPRC are best positioned to benefit from their strong refining exposure, operational flexibility, and diversified earnings streams, while IRPC remains constrained by weak petrochemical fundamentals.
BCP stands out on diversified earnings; SPRC outlook improves. Supportive refining margins should continue to underpin sector earnings, but volatile crude oil prices remain a key headwind. BCP is our top pick at the current share price, supported by strong refining performance and a diversified earnings base that helps reduce volatility. We turn more positive on SPRC, reflecting post-maintenance operational improvements and higher throughput, although market expectations for earnings recovery may be too optimistic. TOP continues to generate industry-leading operational profitability, driven by solid GRM and lubricant margins, but potential inventory losses could mask underlying earnings strength. IRPC remains the most challenged stock due to weak petrochemical fundamentals and greater exposure to inventory losses although an elevated GIM should continue to support profitability. Accordingly, we raised TP of BCP (OUTPERFORM) to Bt50 from Bt40 and SPRC (NEUTRAL) to Bt10.60 from Bt7.90, while maintaining TOP and IRPC at NEUTRAL with unchanged target prices of Bt60 and Bt2, respectively.
Risk factors for the sector. The main risk is the normalization of middle-distillate cracks, as current GRMs are supported by tight diesel and jet fuel supply. Crude price volatility could also lead to inventory losses or margin pressure from higher feedstock and logistics costs. Export restrictions may continue to limit throughput optimization and margin capture, while weak petrochemical spreads remain a headwind for IRPC and TOP. Key ESG risks include environmental impacts and the industry's ability to adapt to the energy transition.
