KCE reported 1Q25 net profit of Bt230mn, missing consensus by 21%. Net profit sank 55% YoY and 18% QoQ due to a 12% YoY plunge in sales, as well as a slash in gross margin to 17.4% in 1Q25 (1Q24: 23.1%, 4Q24: 19.3%) on a slowdown in low-tier double layer product demand. Outlook remains challenging on weak overall demand and downside from the uncertainty about Trump’s tariffs. We cut our 2025F by 11% and 2026F by 7% to reflect a lower gross margin. We maintain our Neutral with a new TP of Bt20.0 (from Bt23.0), based on 17x PE or -1.5SD of the 5-year PE mean.

Weak sales and gross margin lead to weak profit. KCE reported a net profit of Bt230mn in 1Q25, which was 21% below market expectations. Net profit fell by 55% YoY and 18% QoQ on lower revenue (-12% YoY, +2.6% QoQ) and a large narrowing in gross margin to 17.4% in 1Q25 from 23.1% in 1Q24 and 19.3% in 4Q24 on weak demand across nearly all product segments from the slowdown in the automotive industry and customer destocking of excess inventory. The discontinuation of some models and price reductions (4% YoY) requested by some customers also lowered profitability, with orders for new product models not yet sufficient to compensate.

2025 outlook. Management maintains its 2025 target for flat revenue growth YoY due to the continued impact of weak demand, particularly in the automotive market (70% of total sales) as well as other electronics markets. This is attributed to the ongoing weakness in the Chinese and European economies, as well as the impact of US tariffs. It has revised down its gross margin target to 21-22% from the previous 24-25% to accommodate price reductions. In 1Q25, ASP across all products slipped ~4% YoY, more steeply than the historical average of 2.0-2.5%. KCE intends to offset this by negotiating price reductions with its suppliers (expected at 1.0-1.5%) and various cost-saving measures. Gross margin in 1Q25 is expected to be the year’s lowest, with gradual improvement anticipated throughout the remainder of the year.

Expect some recovery QoQ but still weak YoY in 2Q25. Revenue in 2Q25 is expected to rise 3-4% QoQ upon recovery in demand and backlog but revenue will still be down YoY on weak demand. As yet there has been no apparent impact from the increase in US import tariffs. US sales are expected to remain stable in 2Q25. KCE’s management expects to be able to widen gross margin to ~20% in 2Q25 via negotiation with suppliers and cost savings.

Construction of the new factory in Rojana has been postponed due to the continued uncertainty about the market situation. Additionally, with the tariff suspended only 90 days, the company remains cautious about making investments at this time.

Cut 2025-2026 forecasts. We have cut our 2025F by 11% and 2026F by 7% to reflect the cut in gross margin assumption to 21.3% in 2025 and 22.0% in 2026 from 22.7% previously, in line with KCE’s management 2025 target range of 21-22%.

Key risks are changes in purchasing power, a weaker automotive industry than expected, higher raw material costs (copper and epoxy resins) and exchange rate volatility. Key ESG focus areas are labor management and suppliers.
