Spread depressed by higher naphtha cost
Naphtha price rose 2% WoW to US$556/t, tagging the recovery in oil price after Trump made a sudden reversal on his tariffs, easing fears of a global recession and a consequent plunge in oil demand. At the same time, prices of several petrochemical products were adjusted down to reflect lower feedstock prices in previous weeks. This slimmed polymer product spread by 2-8% WoW, especially the olefins chain. It also reaffirms that the demand-supply gap remains wide – and could be amplified by the global trade war via disrupted global trade flow. We stay cautious on the sector given the uncertain outlook of global demand and supply gluts, although share price is already up 11% from its April 8 low.
Average PE/PP spread fell 5% WoW to US$434/t, still above cash cost of US$350/t, but unable to hang on given the demand-supply imbalance. Cautious buying will persist in response to the uncertain outlook for global trade flows. Aromatics product spread fell WoW, especially for benzene, as the closure of the arbitrage window between Asia and the US led to higher inventories. Integrated PET spread dropped 12% WoW to US$121/t, above 12MMA of US$114/t, on lower feedstock cost. PET bottle chip price also fell 3% WoW to a 5-year low of US$750/t but still failed to attract restocking ahead of summer.
SETPETRO (+4% WoW) outperformed the SET (+1.4%), showing more optimism in the sector on higher product spread. This will be short-lived, in our view, as the uncertain global economic outlook will hold back demand. Buyers are expected to stay cautious in restocking with more price negotiations to reflect lower feedstock cost.
