Preview 1Q25F: Sector’s weakest growth
With the weakest showing among covered companies in the sector, we expect 1Q25F core profit at Bt683mn, falling 24% YoY and 40% QoQ, hit by weaker sales and higher SG&A and tax rate. With 39% of its sales from the US & Canada (semi and finished products mostly exported from Thailand), TU is vulnerable to the US tariff hike. In the short term, clients are taking the sidelines, slowing sales; the tariffs are also likely to erode sales in the LT. To factor in lower sales, we cut our 2025F by 12%. Sales uncertainty amid high transformation costs will cap share price upside, but its stock repurchase program (until June 30) will shield share price downside. Maintain NEUTRAL with a new end-2025 TP of Bt12 (from Bt14), based on 12.5x PE (-1S.D. over 10-year PE).
Expect 1Q25F net profit of Bt743mn, -36% YoY and -39% QoQ. Excluding Bt60mn FX gain, 1Q25F core profit will be Bt683mn, -24% YoY and -40% QoQ, hit by weaker sales, higher SG&A/sales on more transformation and marketing expenses and higher tax rate (GMT). Sales are expected to fall 6.5% YoY, with half of this from the stronger baht (THB appreciating 5% YoY against the US$ and 7% against the euro) and half from weak organic growth. Sales in the ambient unit will drop in the mid to high single digits YoY and in the mid teens in the frozen unit on weaker demand in US and Europe and an unexpected rise in spot tuna price that slowed new ambient OEM orders, amid a rise in pet care unit sales in low single digits YoY. Gross margin will widen to 18.6% (+130bps YoY), with a wider margin for ambient seafood from low tuna inventory costs offsetting the weaker pet care margin from higher depreciation expenses at the new factory and no repeat of a reversal of inventory write-down. SG&A/sales will jump to 14.75% (+210bps YoY) on higher transformation expenses, more marketing expenses to boost branded sales in the US and Europe and higher logistics costs. Effective tax rate will be 12% (vs 11% in 1Q24) as the global minimum tax (GMT) kicks in this quarter.
Effect from US tariff hike. Direct impact. In 2024, 39% of sales were from the US and Canada. Of this, 10% came from its Chicken of the Sea production in the US (imported semi-finished products, tuna loin, from Thailand to produce finished goods in the US) and the rest from imports - most from Thailand (tuna loin and canned tuna, frozen shrimp, scallops and crab meat, pet care), and some from Vietnam, India, Indonesia, China, Poland and Ghana. After Trump announced his tariffs on April 2 (10% baseline tariff effective on April 5 and reciprocal tariff effective on April 9), TU’s clients in the US are taking the sidelines, waiting for more clarity. TU’s mitigation plan is to use its 4-6-month inventory (up by 2-3 months from normal) in the US and in transit to support new US orders and shift a part of ambient tuna production from Thailand into Ghana (facing lower US tariffs than Thailand, currently serving orders from Europe) to fill new US orders, though shifting production will take time and production in Ghana is unable to replace all Thai ambient production exported into the US. If there is no change in these tariffs, prices for seafood products in the US will go up, as above 90% of seafood products in the US are imported (mainly from Asia); US demand will have to monitored further. Indirect impact. If the Thai government negotiates to import more tuna from US flagged vessels, TU can source part of its tuna from the US, raising its raw material supply option.
Key risks: Inflationary pressure and THB appreciation. Key ESG risks are GHG emission, waste & water management (E), customer welfare, product quality management, health & safety policies (S).
