Geopolitical tension trigger LNG price spike
Geopolitical tension in the Middle East has triggered an LNG price spike. We take a short-term negative view on SPP margins due to rising costs, but expect LNG prices to stabilize once tensions subside. We recommend a wait and see approach until the picture becomes clearer. At the same time, we maintain a positive medium- to long-term outlook on the sector, driven by new capacity additions such as direct PPAs, more new renewable energy and gas-fired power plants targeted in the new PDP. We thus maintain our OUTPERFORM ratings on GULF (top pick), GPSC, BGRIM, BCPG, and CKP.
LNG price spike after war started in the Middle East. The recent start of fighting in the Middle East will potentially disrupt LNG for the short term, from: 1) closure of the Strait of Hormuz, through which 20% of global LNG flows, and 2) production halts at major facilities in Ras Laffan and Mesaieed Industrial Cities following Iranian attacks, knocking off roughly 20% of global supply. This has already pushed European LNG prices up 24% to EUR53.6/MWh.
Implications for the sector. We see a short-term impact from the market LNG price hike, as Thailand imports ~20% of its total LNG from the Middle East, accounting for 30% of total gas consumption. The impact on Thai utilities will come in two forms. 1) A rise in gas cost for SPP operators BGRIM and GPSC. Based on our sensitivity analysis, each US$1/mmBTU increase in the LNG price raises the pool gas cost by Bt9.3/mmBTU, which raises costs for their industrial customers. However, there should be some offset by an increase in the electricity tariff via the Ft mechanism, though this will lag the higher cost. 2) A shortage in gas feedstock for gas-fired power plants, meaning some plants may need to switch to diesel, which is more expensive. IPP operators, however, are less affected due to the pass-through mechanism.
Action and recommendation. We take a short-term negative view on the sector given the rise in gas cost that will erode SPP margins, though expected to be only short term. We recommend a wait and see approach until the picture becomes clearer. We stay positive for the medium to long term, as we expect LNG prices to decline once the situation stabilizes. Moreover, we expect further capacity additions in Thailand, including direct PPAs of 2,000MW and the new PDP, which is expected to include more aggressive renewable energy additions to achieve Thailand’s commitment to net zero by 2050. Our sector pick is GULF (mid-2026 TP = Bt73) due to lower exposure to the LNG price rise; core earnings continue to be supported by its US power plant and new solar and solar+BESS projects, which will gradually come on line in 4Q25. For GPSC, we maintain our OUTPERFORM rating (end-2026 TP = Bt50) as there may be upside to our projections from PTT’s asset injection plan. We also maintain an OUTPERFORM rating on BGRIM (mid-2026 TP = Bt18.5) on strong earnings contribution from startup of new projects. We stay OUTPERFORM on BCPG (mid-2026 TP = Bt11) on a sharp rise in capacity payments in the US and contributions from the Monsoon wind project. Finally, we stay OUTPERFORM on CKP (mid-2026 TP = Bt3.10) as we expect core operations to improve YoY in 1Q26 on better performance at its hydropower plants.
Key risks: Higher than expected gas cost. Key ESG risks are the environmental impact from exposure to fossil fuels, energy management, high greenhouse gas emissions and nearby community impact.
