4Q24: Below estimates on extra items
AH reported a 4Q24 net profit of Bt120mn, down 13% YoY and 41% QoQ, 25% below market estimates due to Bt30mn extra items (mainly deferred tax impairment for Portugal operations). Excluding this, core profit was Bt150mn, down 64% YoY and 29% QoQ, dragged down by weaker sales and gross margin in tandem with a slow automotive industry in Thailand. We expect the earnings downtrend to continue in 1H25 on a continued slowing in auto production in Thailand. Neutral with end-2025 TP of Bt15/share (down from Bt18/share).
4Q24: Below estimates. AH reported a 4Q24 net profit of Bt120mn, down 13% YoY and 41% QoQ, below market estimate by 25% due to Bt30mn extra items (mainly deferred tax impairment on Portugal operations). Excluding this, core profit was Bt150mn, down 64% YoY and 29% QoQ, dragged down by weaker sales and gross margin in tandem with the poor automotive industry in Thailand. In 2024, AH reported net profit of Bt747mn (down 54%); excluding extra items, core profit was Bt763mn (down 56% YoY). AH announced a DPS of Bt0.48, 3.6% dividend yield. XD is March 13 and payment is May 23.
Highlights:
- OEM parts sales (67% of sales) fell 18% YoY and 7% QoQ to Bt4.2bn in 4Q24, weighted down by weaker operations in Thailand (-25% YoY and -8% QoQ) from slow auto production (-21% YoY and -2% QoQ). Sales from operations in Portugal grew 4% YoY and in China grew 3% YoY.
- Car dealership revenue (33% of sales) slipped 3% YoY and 1% QoQ to Bt2.0bn in 4Q24. Operations in Malaysia were strong (+8% YoY and +1% QoQ) against weak operations in Thailand (-22% YoY and -4% QoQ).
- Gross margin was weak at 7.7% in 4Q24, down from 11.5% in 4Q23 and 8.8% in 3Q24 due to the weaker sales.
Earnings cut. The weak results in 4Q24 leads us to cut our 2025F core earnings forecast by 17% and 2026F by 19%. We expect a continued earnings downtrend in 1H25 on the stagnant auto production in Thailand. Catalysts are: 1) the start of production of new orders, expected in 2H25 and 2) an improved economy, which in turn would boost domestic auto demand and HP loan quality, consequently allowing greater access to auto loans. This would clearly signal an approaching turnaround in the Thai automotive industry and earnings. We maintain Neutral on AH with a new end-2025 TP of Bt15/share (down from end-2025 TP of Bt18/share after revising earnings), based on PE multiplier of 6.2x or -1SD of historical average since 2013.
Risks. 1) Economic uncertainty derailing auto demand, 2) semiconductor shortages that disrupt auto supply chains, 3) litigation cases. We see the key ESG risk as environmental issues (E), but AH is clearly moving on its sustainability development with committed targets.
