AH reported a 1Q25 net profit of Bt306mn, down 4% YoY but surging 155% QoQ, beating market estimate by 63% due to a strong gross margin and lower interest expense. In 2Q25, we expect AH’s core earnings to grow YoY on lower interest expense but drop QoQ on seasonality. We take a more cautious stance on AH as share price shot up 10% after it released results, yet we see possible earnings downside from hiccups in auto production brought by the weak domestic auto market and growing concern for auto exports arising out of US tariffs, which remain uncertain. We rate Neutral with end-2025 TP of Bt15.
1Q25: Beat market estimates. AH reported a 1Q25 net profit of Bt306mn, down 4% YoY but surging 155% QoQ, beating market estimates by 63% due to a strong gross margin and lower interest expense. Excluding extra items from FX gain/loss, core profit was Bt305mn, up 1% YoY and 103% QoQ.
Highlights:
- OEM parts sales (71% of sales) fell 6% YoY but grew 16% QoQ to Bt4.8bn in 1Q25. AH reports an 8% YoY contraction in its operations in Thailand upon slow auto production. Sales from operations in Portugal fell 2% YoY and in China fell 5% YoY. Malaysia is the bright spot, with sales expanding 33% YoY from ramping up AAPICO Avee (60% held by AH, 40% held by a subsidiary of Proton Holdings Berhad).
- Car dealership sales (29% of sales) dropped 18% YoY and 5% QoQ to Bt1.9bn in 1Q25. Operations in Thailand were weak with a 40% YoY sales decline, dragged down by a downtrend in the domestic auto market. Operations in Malaysia slipped by 1% YoY.
- Gross margin was at 9.9% in 1Q25, up from 9.5% in 1Q24 and 7.7% in 4Q24, resulting from cost control and lower sales contribution from the car dealership business, which has a low margin.
- Interest expense was at Bt77mn, down 28% YoY and 25% QoQ, from debt repayment and lower finance cost.
2Q25 outlook to soften on seasonality. 1Q25 results accounted for 36% of our full-year forecast. In 2Q25, we expect core earnings to increase YoY (lower interest expense) but drop QoQ (on seasonality). We forecast AH’s 2025 core earnings at Bt836mn, up 10%. However, we see possible earnings downside from hiccups in auto production brought by the weak domestic auto market and growing concern for auto exports arising out of US tariffs, which remain uncertain. We maintain Neutral on AH with end-2025 TP of Bt15, based on PE multiplier of 6.2x or -1SD of historical average since 2013.
Risks. 1) Economic uncertainty derailing auto demand, 2) semiconductor shortages that disrupt auto supply chains, 3) litigation cases. We see the key ESG risk as environmental issues (E), but AH is clearly moving on its sustainability development with committed targets.
