Rising bookings but be cautious
Total bookings of 4-wheeled vehicles at the 2025 Motor Show grew 45% from last year, propelled by an increase in EV bookings, which gained ground to account for 65% of total bookings, while ICE bookings dropped. Despite this, we do not expect a significant improvement in the domestic auto market in the near-term, dragged down by deteriorating HP loan quality and consequent strictures on auto loans. Auto exports may be hit by the US import tariffs on autos and concerns on global economic slowdown. We stay Underweight on the automotive sector.
Rising bookings... Thailand held its annual Bangkok International Motor Show from March 24 to April 6, where 77,379 4-wheel vehicles were booked, a 45% jump from last year. By vehicle type, ~50K bookings were for electric vehicles (EVs), surging 187% from last year and rising to 65% of total bookings, surging ahead of bookings for internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles at ~27K units (down 25% from last year, 35% of total bookings). Behind the growth in EV bookings is more affordable prices and a wider range of choices, most notably China’s brands of 100% battery EVs (BEV).
…but be cautious ahead. We do not see the growth in motor show bookings as indicating significant near term improvement in the domestic auto market (36% of auto production in 2024), as it continues to battle several negatives, including rising NPLs and special-mention loans (SML) in the auto segment, reflecting deteriorating HP loan quality. This will lead to strictures on auto loans. Looking at the commercial vehicle market, which is closely related to business activity, our rolling 12-month commercial vehicle sales does not exhibit clear signs of recovery. In March, the government introduced a measure, funded at Bt5bn, to guarantee pickup HP loans. With this, it hopes to increase sales to over 6,250 pickup trucks. Sine the figure accounts for just 3% of commercial vehicle sales and 1% of total domestic auto sales in 2024, we do not see this as much of a push to the domestic auto sales. Auto exports (64% of auto production in 2024) are positioned to be hit by the US tariffs on auto imports since the US accounts for 6% of Thai auto exports (both vehicles and parts) and concerns on global economic slowdown.
Underweight. We stay cautious on the automotive sector since, in the near term, there are no clear signs of industry recovery and in fact we see downside to our auto production forecast of 1.5mn units in 2025 and thus earnings for auto parts suppliers. A sector catalyst would be an improved economy, which in turn would boost domestic auto demand and loan quality and also auto exports and clearly signal an approaching turnaround in the Thai automotive industry and earnings.
Risks. 1) Concerns on economic uncertainty, increasing cost of living and rising interest rates that may derail auto demand, 2) semiconductor shortages that disrupt auto supply chains and 3) the level of adaptation to the move from the ICE vehicle by incumbent auto parts suppliers. We see key ESG risk as environmental issues (E).
