4Q24: Core profit low, as expected

4Q24 net profit was Bt787mn, 8% above our estimate and in line with consensus, up 69% YoY and 383% QoQ due to FX gain. Core profit was Bt328mn, in line with our estimate, falling 23% YoY and 59% QoQ on Bt206mn FX losses recorded at associates and JVs in 4Q24. We expect 1Q25 earnings to be flat YoY on capacity addition via GIFU solar, U-Tapao phase 1 and Kopos wind farm projects. We maintain our Neutral rating with a target price of Bt14.9 on DCF valuation (WACC: 4.5%, terminal growth: 0.9%), with no near-term catalyst.

4Q24 net profit was Bt787mn, up 69% YoY and 383% QoQ, 8% higher than our estimate due to higher FX gain and in line with consensus. Removing the extraordinary items shows a core profit of Bt328mn, in line with our estimate, down 23.4% YoY and 59.4% QoQ due to Bt206mn FX losses recorded at associates and JVs in 4Q24 (4Q23: Bt71mn profit, 3Q24: Bt236mn profit).

1Q25 outlook. We anticipate a flat 1Q25 performance YoY but growth QoQ (off a low base). We expect to see an increase in the pool gas price (January 2025: Bt313/mmBTU, 4Q24: Bt297/mmBTU, 1Q24: Bt321/mmBTU) and a Bt0.03/kWh reduction in electricity tariff for the January-April 2025 period. At the same time, we expect some partial offset by better earnings at associates and JVs.

Takeaway from meeting. BGRIM’s management expects electricity tariffs to come down gradually. Initially, it estimates a reduction to ~Bt4/unit over the rest of the year (in line with our estimate). It expects gas prices to be in the range of Bt320-350/mnBTU in 2025, an increase from Bt324/mnBTU in 2024. To save cost, BGRIM plans to import five LNG cargoes this year, allowing it to bypass the Bt5/mnBTU margin payment to PTT. Based on our analysis, each cargo import will save ~Bt17mn in gas costs. BGRIM also expects 40-50MW in new electricity demand to come from new industrial users as well as data center customers, with conclusions expected in 1H25. This includes more electricity sold to current customers (10MW) as well as to new customers (30-40MW), and also equity participation in data centers. The impact from GMT is expected to be minimal in 2025-26, but the expiration of BoI promotions on several plants in 2024 has raised effective tax rate to ~15%. New project updates: Nakwol 1 offshore wind farm (49% equity) is currently 39% complete, with the start of offshore tower installation depending on weather conditions and vessel readiness. COD is expected this year, with a total capacity of 365MW (20-year). The ARECO solar power plant (65MW capacity, 100% equity) is 68% complete, with COD expected in 2H25. Net D/E target is a maximum of 2x. It is working on asset monetization, expected in 1H25, that should reduce net D/E ratio to 1.0-1.1x from 1.86x at the end of 2024.

Key risks. Higher than expected gas cost and delayed adjustment of Ft rate to catch up with fuel cost. Key ESG risks are the environmental impact from its exposure to fossil fuels, energy management, high greenhouse gas emission, and nearby community impact.
