3QFY25: Narrowed core loss

BTS reported a 3QFY25 net profit of Bt3bn from a Bt456mn loss in 2QFY25 and a Bt4.8bn loss in 3QFY24. Stripping out a one-time gain gives a core loss of Bt202mn, halved from the Bt456mn loss in 2QFY25 but sinking from the Bt144mn profit in 3QFY24. In 4QFY25F, we expect core profit to fall YoY but grow QoQ. We maintain NEUTRAL but raise our SOTP-based TP to Bt6.2 from Bt5.3 after rolling valuation over to end-FY2026F and factoring in a higher value for its investment in VGI (34% stake). Upside lies in the possible government purchase of the concessions for the Pink and Yellow lines, as these two projects contribute annual losses of Bt1.6bn.

Recap of 3QFY25. BTS reported 3QFY25 (Oct-Dec 2024) net profit of Bt3bn vs a Bt456mn loss QoQ and a Bt4.8bn loss YoY. In the quarter, BTS booked two one-time gains: Bt3.4bn from a change in the status of RABBIT and ROCTEC from associates to subsidiaries and Bt268mn from RABBIT’s gain on sale of TST Tower. Stripping these out shows a core loss of Bt202mn, improving from a loss of Bt456mn in 2QFY25 on improving ridership on the Pink and Yellow lines, but worse than the Bt144mn profit in 3QFY24 due to loss contribution from the Pink and Yellow lines. This gives a 9MFY25 core loss of Bt1bn vs our FY2025 forecast of a core loss of Bt1.2bn, which we view as being on track.

Key takeaways from analyst meeting. BTS hosted an analyst meeting yesterday, at which its tone was neutral. Management believes the government’s intention to mandate a system-wide flat fare of Bt20 may initially require a direct subsidy, as the option to repurchase the concession would take time and is unlikely to be completed by the government’s target of Sep 1. The extension of the Pink Line is expected to be operational by July 2025 (construction is now over 86% complete) and is anticipated to bring an increase of more than 10,000 riders per day. The BMA still owes Bt29bn and discussions continue as to how to repay it.

Expect 4QFY25F core earnings to fall YoY but improve QoQ. YoY growth will continue to weaken on losses from the Pink and Yellow lines. QoQ, we expect to see improvement via a smaller loss at Rabbit Life at RABBIT. Additionally, we expect improving operations at the Pink and Yellow lines as ridership in Jan 2025 (excluding the free trip period) indicated QoQ growth.

Fine-tuning assumptions. We raise our FY2025F earnings to a profit of Bt2bn from a Bt1.2bn loss to reflect the one-time gain booked in 3QFY25 while keep our core loss unchanged at Bt1.2bn. In FY2026F, we expect core loss to narrow to Bt416mn, backed by improving Pink and Yellow line ridership. We assume average ridership for the Pink Line at 78k in FY2026F from 60k in FY2025F and 54k in FY2026F from 40k in 2025F for the Yellow Line. Additionally, the loss contributed by RABBIT should also be lower in tandem with lower loss at Rabbit Life.

Risks and concerns. Slow ridership growth in the Pink and Yellow lines. ESG risk for BTS is service reliability which could negatively impact ridership.
