Preview 1Q25F: Growing YoY but more slowly
1Q25F core profit is estimated at Bt2.7bn, +9% YoY on slightly better sales and gross margin but -33% QoQ from seasonality. We cut our 2025F by 3% with a lower SSS assumption and more conservative assumption for synergy. We now look for 2025F earnings growth of 15% YoY, the sector’s second-best, behind CPALL. We expect YoY growth in 2Q25F to be higher than in 1Q25 with more synergy and better sales and margin; we expect a QoQ fall on seasonality. We maintain Outperform with a new end-2025 DCF TP of Bt32 (from Bt35) (WACC of 7.6%, LT growth of 2%).
Expect 1Q25F net profit of Bt2.7bn, +9% YoY but -32% QoQ. Without the 4Q24 extra item (Bt55mn in amalgamation expenses), core profit will be Bt2.7bn, +9% YoY from better sales and gross margin (at B2B), with stable SG&A/sales (lower expenses at B2C balancing higher expense at B2B), but -33% QoQ from seasonality.
1Q25F highlights. Sales are expected to grow 2% YoY on store expansion and small SSS growth. SSS is expected to inch up 0.3% YoY in the B2B unit (vs +0.4% YoY in 4Q24) and 0.2% YoY in the B2C unit in Thailand (vs +1.9% YoY in 4Q24), hit by: 1) no leap day this year, slicing 1% YoY off SSS; 2) its strategy to stop selling low-margin big-lot cigarette and alcoholic beverage sales to distributors from Oct 2024 in the B2B unit, cutting SSS by 2% YoY; 3) this year’s lower maximum spend for the E-Receipt program that eroded non-food sales (home line and electronic products) and weaker purchasing power cutting dry food sales (health & beauty products) in the B2C unit. SSS continued to grow in fresh food (led by sales volume growth) and O2O. By region, sales grew strongest in the south and north and weakest in the northeast and metropolitan Bangkok. Expansion included a new Eco Plus store in the B2B unit and seven new Lotus Go Fresh stores (net of closures) in the B2C unit. Mall revenue for the B2C unit dipped 1% YoY, with stable occupancy rate but lower rental rate (less favorable tenant mix from banking and mobile phone kiosks to food tenants). Gross margin will widen 10bps YoY, with a wider margin at the B2B unit (+20bps YoY) from less low-margin big lot sales amid a stable margin at the B2C unit, with a weaker margin in Thailand (less high-margin non-food and dry food sales) offsetting a better margin in Malaysia. SG&A/sales is expected to be stable YoY, with higher SG&A in the B2B unit from new stores and more O2O variable expenses balancing lower SG&A in the B2C unit from back-office cost control. Interest expenses will rise 4% YoY, with Bt65mn in interest expenses from Habitat fully recorded in 1Q25.
2025F earnings revision. We cut our 2025F by 3%, reducing our SSS assumption to reflect the consumption slowdown and using a more conservative assumption for synergy. Though synergy post amalgamation did not yet kick in in 1Q25F, we expect more synergy over the rest of 2025F, with gross margin improvement (CPAXT signed 40% of its target for new trade term contracts with suppliers at end-1Q25) and back-office cost savings. We keep our synergy assumption unchanged at Bt2.6bn in 2025-27F (vs CPAXT’s Bt5.2bn target in 2025-26F), with Bt600mn booked in 2025F (vs Bt1bn earlier) and Bt2bn in 2026-27F (vs Bt1.6bn earlier). We have not yet included upside from an interest rate cut: each 25bps rate cut will raise earnings by 0.8%.
