Laggard plays despite decent growth
We prefer consumer finance stocks as a laggard play given their underperforming share prices despite solid earnings growth. We expect consumer finance companies to deliver double-digit earnings growth in 2026F, driven by better NIM, moderate loan growth, and easing credit costs. Although we factor in a QoQ rise in credit costs over the rest of the year, we expect 2026F credit costs to ease, with the potential to come in lower than expected. The sector picks are TIDLOR (highest 2026F earnings growth), MTC (attractive valuation relative to its earnings growth outlook and ROE), and AEONTS (attractive dividend yield).
Potential lower-than-expected credit cost. In 2Q26, consumer finance companies saw less-than-expected impact from inflationary pressures triggered by the Middle East conflicts. We expect an ease in NPL formation in 2H26, thanks to the Thai Help Thai Plus measures and an ease in inflationary pressure. Debt collection in July was stable. Although we factor in a QoQ rise in credit costs over the rest of the year, we expect 2026F credit costs to ease, with the potential to come in lower than expected. TIDLOR lowered its credit cost guidance for the second time to 2-2.5% from 2.3-2.8% (vs. original guidance of 2.5-2.8%) to fine-tune for a lower-than-expected 1H26 credit cost. Most finance companies (except SAWAD) have built LLR coverage to a comfortable level. TIDLOR and MTC have a potential to see lower-than-expected credit cost in 2026 due to their high LLR coverage.
Better NIM from easing cost of funds. NIM is expected to improve further in 2H26 and 2027, because of a continued ease in cost of funds from a rollover of debentures at a lower cost. We expect Thailand to remain in a low-interest-rate environment with an unchanged policy rate of 1% in 2H26 and 2027.
Accelerating loan growth in 2H26. Consumer finance companies saw a QoQ seasonal recovery in loan growth in 2Q26, but YTD loan growth was behind the full-year target due to their cautious lending policy. All companies under our coverage expected loan growth to accelerate in 2H26 due to a relaxation of credit policy and high seasonality. We believe that a title loan growth will be in the medium-to-high single digits in 2026-2028, down from the double digits seen in the past. Growth in unsecured loans is expected to remain subdued over 2026-2028.
Decent earnings growth. We expect earnings growth for most companies to rise HoH and YoY in 2H26, driven by better loan growth and NIM. We expect earnings growth to reach double digits in 2026, supported by easing credit costs, an improving NIM, and moderate loan growth. We expect earnings growth to moderate in 2027 due to smaller reductions in credit costs and cost of funds, alongside sustainable loan growth.
Decent dividend yield. As a result of easing D/E ratio and decent earnings growth, consumer finance companies (except MTC) offer a moderate dividend yield at 4.2-5.6% for 2026. TIDLOR and AEONTS are implementing share repurchase programs, which should help support their share prices.
Laggard plays with an undemanding valuation. Consumer finance share prices have underperformed the SET over the past 12 months, despite solid earnings growth. Microfinance stocks (MTC, SAWAD, and TIDLOR) have become value stocks, with valuations cheaper than those of banks despite offering stronger earnings growth. AEONTS is trading at PBV discount to ROE with a decent dividend yield. Most stocks are trading below historical means by two standard deviations. We view this as a buying opportunity for microfinance companies, which are trading at a PEG below 1x and at a PBV discount relative to ROE.
Top pick: 1) TIDLOR on the back of the strongest earnings growth in 2026, a decent dividend yield, and a share repurchase program to support its share price. 2) MTC on the back of the lowest valuation in terms of PEG and PBV relative to ROE, alongside moderate earnings growth. 3) AEONTS on a decent dividend yield with a share repurchase program to support its share price.
Key risks: 1) Asset quality risk from an economic downturn as a result of the trade war, 2) credit cost risk from falling used vehicle prices, 3) rising competition from banks and upcoming virtual banks, and 4) ESG risk from market conduct and regulatory risk.
