2Q26: Beat all estimates; solid outlook
GUNKUL reported a 2Q26 net profit that beat our and consensus estimates by 15% due to higher-than-expected EPC revenue, with core profit up 56% YoY and 26% QoQ on strong EPC and trading revenue. The outlook is expected to remain positive in 2H26 and 2027, driven by strong backlogs in the EPC and trading businesses, as well as upcoming biddings. We revised up our 2026-27 core earnings forecasts by 3% and 4%. We maintain an OUTPERFORM rating and roll over our target price to mid-2027 of Bt6.2 (from Bt5.8), based on a DCF valuation (WACC of 7.2%, terminal growth of 3%).
Reported 2Q26 net profit beat our and consensus estimates. GUNKUL reported a 2Q26 net profit of Bt575mn, beating our and consensus estimates by 15% on better-than-expected Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) revenue. Excluding extra items, core profit stood at Bt562mn, which also beat our forecast. Core profit rose 56% YoY and 26% QoQ, driven by revenue growth of 41% YoY and 10% QoQ from the EPC and trading businesses. This was supported by ongoing revenue recognition from several public and private energy and electrical system construction projects, alongside continuous expansion in solar rooftop installations. Although the gross margin slipped YoY to 33.9% from 37.5% in 2Q25 due to a higher revenue contribution from the EPC business, which typically carries lower margins than the power generation business, it improved QoQ on economies of scale. Meanwhile, the SG&A-to-revenue ratio declined to 10.6% (2Q25: 14.5%, 1Q26: 12.1%), benefiting from efficient cost control.
The outlook is expected to remain positive in 2H26, driven by strong backlogs in the EPC and trading businesses as well as upcoming biddings, particularly government transmission upgrades and grid modernization projects following the approval of the Bt400bn Royal Decree (Bt200bn of which will focus on the green energy transition). Moreover, the data center construction cycle is starting, and the new PDP2026 (mostly solar power projects) draft is expected within this year. As GUNKUL is a local market leader in the power EPC and solar power industries, backed by cost advantages from its in-house manufacturing and a strong financial position (net D/E at 0.9x vs. debt covenant at 3x), GUNKUL is well positioned to win bids for new projects.
Revised up 2026-27 core earnings forecasts. We revised up our 2026-27 core profit forecasts by 3% and 4%, respectively, to reflect better-than-expected EPC revenue.
Valuation & recommendations. We maintain an OUTPERFORM rating and roll over our target price to mid-2027 of Bt6.2 (from Bt5.8 previously), based on a DCF valuation (WACC of 7.2%, terminal growth of 3%). We like GUNKUL, which is positioned to see the sector’s highest earnings growth of 31% in 2026, with continued growth of 12% and 38% in 2027-28 from new projects as Thailand transitions to green energy, along with a new contribution from the Philippines floating solar project, which start contribution in 4Q27.
Key risks: Lower return on new investments and regulatory changes. Key ESG risk is the social impact from upscaling of its EPC arm.
