Preview 1Q25F: Profit to surge QoQ

PTT’s 1Q25F net profit (release May 13) is expected to recover strongly QoQ to Bt23bn on lower FX loss, though still down 21% YoY due to lower oil price and gas demand. Core profit is expected to rise 16% QoQ on higher profit from P&R and oil segments, able to offset lower E&P earnings. Lower oil price is expected to erode 2Q25 profit but its integrated business model will continue to protect earnings from oil price volatility. We reaffirm our OUTPERFORM on attractive upside to TP of Bt41, based on sum-of-the-parts valuation. Current share price is undemanding at 0.7x PBV (2025F), and dividend yield of 6.8%.

Gas business profit to slip QoQ on lower volume. Gas sales volume is expected to fall 14% YoY and 4% QoQ to only 3,863mmcfd due to lower demand from IPPs, particularly those with LNG shipper licenses, plus lower electricity demand. This will be offset by higher sales to gas separation plants, which bumped up utilization rate to 93% in 1Q25 from 84.7% in 4Q24 on higher gas supply from the Gulf of Thailand. GSP sales volume was stable QoQ at 1.67mt to 1.68mt, supported by ethane sales from higher gas supply from the Gulf of Thailand as there were fewer shutdowns in 1Q25. This was offset by lower LPG sales volume due to slower domestic demand, particularly in household and transportation segments. E&P profit fell 16% YoY and 13% QoQ due to lower sales volume and ASP.

Higher profit from oil marketing expected. Oil segment earnings are expected to continue to grow QoQ on a 12% QoQ rise in gross profit/liter to Bt0.93/liter for the mobility segment with small stock loss, although competition remained intense. Oil sales volume is expected to drop 5% QoQ on seasonally weaker demand but rise 3.7% YoY to 6.72bn liters, driven by higher jet fuel volume in the commercial segment. We expect contribution from P&R associates to improve QoQ, especially the oil refining segment, on lower stock loss, while market GRM was hurt by lower gasoline crack spread. Lower extra expenses in the petrochemical segment also supported that segment’s net profit in 1Q25.

2Q25F profit to slip on lower oil price. We expect gas sales volume to recover QoQ on high seasonal demand although YoY will be eroded by more imports by other LNG shippers, eating into gas sales volume. Earnings will be aided by higher sales volume at PTTEP due to fewer maintenance shutdowns. The key downside risk is lower oil price, which would hurt upstream ASP, although there is a lag before gas price is adjusted to reflect the current oil price weakness. This will be offset to some extent by a better oil marketing performance due to improving marketing margin and seasonal demand.

Key risks: An economic slowdown would erode demand for PTT’s energy and petrochemical products while oil price volatility may cause more stock loss. Other risks are asset impairment, losses from asset divestment, regulatory changes on GHG emissions and the government’s intervention in the retail oil business. Key ESG risk factors are the environmental impact of its business and how it adapts during the transition to clean energy.
