PTTEP’s 1Q25 net profit fell 11% YoY and 9% QoQ to Bt16.6bn, in line with INVX and consensus estimates, on lower sales volume (-3% QoQ) and ASP (-0.2% QoQ) due to a higher proportion of gas sales. Unit cost also rose 5% QoQ on higher depreciation and lower sales volume. 1Q25 profit was 25% of our 2025F. Despite higher sales volume QoQ in 2Q25, we expect net profit to weaken QoQ on lower ASP. We maintain our 2025F of Bt66.8bn with downside risk from lower oil price. Maintain Outperform with TP of Bt162, based on LT Dubai oil price of US$65/bbl.
Sales volume down QoQ on maintenance shutdown and lower oil loading. Sales volume slid 3% QoQ to 484kBOED on the planned maintenance shutdown of an operating gas field in Thailand, Block G2/61 (Bongkot), and lower oil sales volume from projects in Oman and Algeria, all in line with guidance. Sales volume in 1Q25 is expected to be the year’s lowest on the most operational downtime in the Gulf of Thailand. PTTEP accelerated production from Arthit field to 330mmcfd vs. the daily contracted quantity (DCQ) of 280mmcfd to compensate for the lower gas production from Bongkot. DCQ of this field was raised to 330mmcfd from 2Q25.
ASP dragged by more gas sales in 1Q25. Although both oil and gas prices increased QoQ in 1Q25, ASP edged down 0.2% QoQ to US$45.7/BOE (-3% YoY) due to a higher proportion of gas sales (73%) on gas price of US$5.95/mmbtu (+0.8% YoY, +1.5% QoQ) and price of liquid products (oil and condensate) of US$73.4/BOE (-7.5% YoY, +1.9% QoQ). Note that gas price is about 51% below oil price. The discount on average price for liquid products widened to US$3.6/BOE vs. the normal US$1-2/BOE due to the lag before price adjustment for oil assets in the Middle East and Algeria, reflecting the effect of the low oil price in 4Q24. Unit cost rose 6.3% YoY and 4.9% QoQ to US$30.8/BOE due to volume impact and higher depreciation cost. EBITDA margin of 72% in 1Q25 was in line with the company’s long-term target of 70-75%.
2Q25F guidance. Management expects sales volume in 2Q25 to rise QoQ to 500-505kboed on less maintenance in Thailand and more oil loading in Oman and Algeria. It says sales volume will continue to grow in 2H25 and stands by its 2025 sales volume target of 505-510kBOED, up from 489kBOED in 2024. The key risk is ASP, which could be eroded by the current oil price weakness, while gas price is expected to soften to US$5.8/mmbtu in 2Q25. Current gas price guidance is based on Dubai of US$70-75/bbl. The next major gas price adjustment is in Oct 2025, which should have marginal impact on average gas price for full-year 2025.
TP maintained at Bt162. Our TP (end-2025) of Bt162 is based on LT Dubai of US$63/bbl and Brent of US$65/bbl from 2027, aligning with the current forward curve. We continue to keep our volume assumption at 3% below guidance to provide a margin of safety. We stay Outperform on the tempting discount to DCF valuation and healthy balance sheet with net D/E of only 0.1x. (See Figure 8 for sensitivity of TP and earnings to oil price.)
Risk factors: 1) Volatile crude oil price, 2) higher unit cost, 3) asset impairment and 4) regulatory changes on GHG emissions. Key ESG risk factors are the environmental impact of its business and adapting to transition to clean energy.
