4Q24: Misses estimates, still in the red

Missing consensus estimates, PTTGC reported a net loss of Bt11.7bn in 4Q24, better than the net loss of Bt19.3bn in 3Q24 but worse than the net profit of Bt5.1bn in 4Q23. Operations were hit by lower product spreads and sales volume in all segments due to seasonality, with losses growing to Bt7.4bn in 4Q24 from a Bt1.1bn loss in 3Q24. It booked Bt4.3bn in additional provisions for Vencorex and PTTAC vs. impairments of Bt16.5bn in 3Q24. Net profit was also hit by FX loss of Bt1bn vs. gain of Bt2.9bn in 3Q24. This brought 2024 to a net loss of Bt29.8bn, sunk by Bt21.8bn in impairment and provisions and Bt9.4bn net loss from operations, hit by lower refinery profit. It announced a 2024 dividend of Bt0.5/share (XD: Mar 3). We expect 1Q25 to be better on improved refinery (no maintenance) and olefins (more ethane feedstock) ops. We maintain our TP (2025F) of Bt29, based on 0.5x PBV (-1.5SD) to reflect a more cautious view on PTTGC’s earnings outlook. Maintain Outperform.

Upstream and polymer segments hit by low season. Operating performance worsened in 4Q24 with net operating loss widening to Bt7.4bn from Bt1.1bn in 3Q24, pulled down by olefins and polymers on low seasonal demand, which eroded product spread, and the retroactive impact of ethane cost of Bt450-500mn in 4Q24 as the ethane sales agreement with PTT was finalized in late-3Q24, which raised ethane cost by 3%, though this was partly offset by higher ethane volume starting from 4Q24. Oil refining was also hurt by a 30-day preventive maintenance, which kept growth of its operating GRM to only US$3.7/bbl vs. US$3.5/bbl in 3Q24 despite higher cracker spread for middle distillates. A 20% QoQ fall in aromatics product spread, especially for PX, also damaged this segment’s profit (-69% YoY, -70% QoQ).

Performance chemicals down QoQ on seasonality. Demand for performance chemical products weakened QoQ due to low season for Allnex products, dragging the segment’s profit down 63% YoY and 64% QoQ in 4Q24. Allnex adjusted EBITDA fell 20% YoY and 35% QoQ to €45mn due to lower adjusted EBITDA margin at 9% vs. 12% in 3Q24. Note that apart from the 6% QoQ fall in sales volume, a higher proportion of lower-margin sales in Asia also lowered Allnex adjusted EBITDA. Vencorex had Bt1.1bn losses in 4Q24 since the sale is not completed, though sales volume was minimal.

Better core profit in 2025F. Although we expect the demand-supply imbalance in the petrochemical market to continue to hurt product prices and margin, we expect core profit to improve YoY in 2025 on recovery of EBITDA margin for the olefins segment on a higher proportion of ethane feedstock of 38%, up from 33% in 2024. Lower losses from the JV in intermediate products (PTTAC) will support 2025 profit after a loss of >Bt9.5bn in 2024, including impairment and provisions for related expenses for withdrawal from PTTAC. Also, the oil refinery will be operated at full capacity, hence PTTGC’s GRM should improve QoQ although Singapore GRM could fall QoQ.

TP of Bt29 maintained, still Outperform. We believe PTTGC has passed its worst, with huge expenses for business restructuring. Current 2025F valuation of 5.7x EV/EBITDA and 0.3x PBV is compelling against regional average of 9.7x and 0.8x, respectively. Our TP of Bt29 is based on PBV (2025F) of 0.5x (-1.5SD of 5-year average) to reflect the bearish Thai stock market and concerns about new US tariffs which may disrupt global commodity trade flow. Our TP is only 6x EV/EBITDA (2025F), under >9x regional avg.

Key risk factors: 1) Volatile crude oil price and product spread for oil refining and petrochemicals, 2) higher feedstock cost due to lower gas feedstock, 3) asset impairment, 4) regulatory change on GHG emissions and single-use plastics (<3% of capacity), and 5) change in allocation of domestic gas supply to petrochemicals. Key ESG risk factors include the environmental impact of its business and how it adapts during the transition to clean energy and a circular economy.
