Market today | The SET is expected to enter resting mode after a steady move up, with upside limited and resistances at 1435 and 1440; the lower bound is at 1420 as a support. A fall below this would be a negative sign and open up downside with next support at 1415. | Today’s highlights | • US non-farm employment increased by 216,000 in Dec, surpassing expectations. Unemployment rate was 3.7%, missing estimates, indicating a robust labor market that may lead the Fed to maintain higher interest rates for longer than anticipated. • China is preparing to impose sanctions on five US arms manufacturers in retaliation for its latest sale of weapons to Taiwan, heightening tension between the US and China. • Zhongzhu Enterprise Group has filed for bankruptcy following severe liquidity issues after lending billions of dollars to China's real estate sector. • Protests led Libya to announce the shutdown of the Sharara oil field, which produces 300,000 barrels per day, accounting for one-third of the country's production. • The Ministry of Commerce reported a decrease in inflation in Dec 2023 of 0.83%MoM, the lowest contraction in 34 months and exceeding market expectations. This brought average core inflation for 2022 to ~1.23%. • The JSCCIB has scheduled a meeting on Jan 10 to assess Thailand's economic outlook for 2024, accommodating various factors. The meeting will also address geopolitical conflicts due to their impact on global and Thai economies and will ask the government for additional economic stimulus measures and restructure the energy sector sustainably. • Real estate and construction businesses have lower confidence following bond defaults in the market. ThaiBMA has announced stricter criteria for controlling the sale of high-yield bonds. The government is preparing to establish a fund to support the sector, with a close watch on the first quarter of 2023 when high-yield bonds worth Bt38bn are due for repayment. | Strategy today | In the short term, the Thai stock market is expected to continue moving up but with limited upside due to fluctuation from externals and waiting for new catalysts. Our strategy is selective buy. | Trading today | Weekly portfolio: In the short term the SET is expected to continue moving up but upside remains limited due to fluctuations from external factors and waiting for new catalysts. We recommend "selective buy" in themes with specific drivers: 1) Stocks expected to benefit from the January Effect: from 2011-2022 the SET had a 69.23% probability of rising with an average return of 1.37% - AOT, KTB, KBANK and DIF, whose data shows outperformance of the SET's average return. 2) Stocks benefiting from declining bond yield - Commerce (CPALL and CPAXT), Healthcare (BDMS), Utilities (GULF), Property Development (AP) and Consumer Finance (TIDLOR). 3) Stocks benefiting from the E-Receipt measure allowing a personal income tax deduction on purchases of up to Bt50,000 between Jan 1-Feb 15, 2024 - CRC, HMPRO, ZEN, MINT and ADVANC. In the medium term we recommend being cautious on stocks that are set to be affected by El Nino, which will erode purchasing power in the agricultural sector: Finance (MTC, SAWAD), Automotive (SAT, STANLY), Beverages (CBG has high sugar cost) and Food & Agriculture (CPF GFPT and BTG). | Daily top picks | BBL: 4Q23 profit is expected to grow 64%YoY and 10%QoQ from higher NIM and lower ECL and will continue to grow in 2024 off lower credit cost, expanding NIM and loan growth. The company is poised to benefit most from business relocation to ASEAN. BBL is listed on the SETESG Index with an “AA” rating. PTTEP: In the short term the company benefits from rising crude oil price upon disruption at Libya’s top oilfield and higher tension in the Middle East. Although 4Q23 net profit is expected to decline 10%QoQ from non-recurring items, core profit is expected to grow 5%QoQ from higher sales volume and lower operating expense due to lower maintenance cost. | Today’s reports | Commerce - Presentation Food - Presentation Tourism (Hotel) - Supportive climate to drive price performance PTTEP - Preview 4Q23F: weaker QoQ expected SPALI - 2023 presales miss target | | Click here to read and/or download file Daily240108_E |
