Market today | The SET is still resting after falling below 1420 yesterday, bringing a negative technical indicator, with next supports at 1410 and 1400. The rise in US markets is expected to be short-term and sentiment-driven. The SET has an upper bound at resistances at 1426 and 1436. | Today’s highlights | • The Ministry of Finance has confirmed the beginning of the digital wallet on May 1 after the Council of State ruled that the government can issue loans under Sections 53 and 57 of the Fiscal Discipline Act. Public hearings will be held, with a report presented to cabinet on Jan 9. The digital wallet committee is to meet within a week. • The Thai baht weakened over 1.3%, the sharpest depreciation in the region, following government pressure on the BoT to forestall an interest rate hike while inflation is negative. The market interprets this as suggesting the MPC is preparing to cut rates by 50bps this year, and expects the baht to continue weakening. The Ministry of Finance said the rapid increase in interest rate has led to negative inflation. • The TNSC forecasts 2024 export growth of 2%YoY, up from the estimated 1%YoY contraction in 2023, driven by improved exports to primary and new markets. • The Nasdaq rose by 2.2%DoD, buoyed by a drop in US 10-year bond yield to 3.966%. Amazon (+2.6%), Alphabet (+2.3%), Meta (+1.9%), Netflix (+2.3%), and Apple (+2.4%) all rose, with Apple announcing the release of the Apple Vision Pro in the US starting Feb 2. • Saudi Aramco has cut the price of crude oil sold to the Asian market for February delivery to the lowest in 27 months. OPEC's oil production in December increased by 70,000 barrels/day, pressuring WTI and Brent crude prices down 4.1% and 3.4% DoD, respectively. • The PBOC may reduce the reserve requirement ratio for banks to stimulate lending, despite the central bank recently injecting massive liquidity into the market through other tools. | Strategy today | In the short term, the Thai stock market is expected to continue moving up but with limited upside due to fluctuation from externals and waiting for new catalysts. Our strategy is selective buy. | Trading today | Weekly portfolio: In the short term the SET is expected to continue moving up but upside remains limited due to fluctuations from external factors and waiting for new catalysts. We recommend “selective buy” in themes with specific drivers: 1) Stocks expected to benefit from the January Effect: from 2011-2022 the SET had a 69.23% probability of rising with an average return of 1.37% - AOT, KTB, KBANK and DIF, whose data shows outperformance of the SET’s average return. 2) Stocks benefiting from declining bond yield – Commerce (CPALL and CPAXT), Healthcare (BDMS), Utilities (GULF), Property Development (AP) and Consumer Finance (TIDLOR). 3) Stocks benefiting from the E-Receipt measure allowing a personal income tax deduction on purchases of up to Bt50,000 between Jan 1–Feb 15, 2024 – CRC, HMPRO, ZEN, MINT and ADVANC. In the medium term we recommend being cautious on stocks that are set to be affected by El Nino, which will erode purchasing power in the agricultural sector: Finance (MTC, SAWAD), Automotive (SAT, STANLY), Beverages (CBG has high sugar cost) and Food & Agriculture (CPF GFPT and BTG). | Daily top picks | GPSC: In the short term the company benefits from declining bond yield and low price for natural gas due to a warmer winter. The company is in the process of adjusting electricity sales contracts for industrial customers to be based on gas price to reduce the volatility brought by changes in Ft, which does not align with cost. KCE: Profit will begin to recover, with 4Q23 profit expected rise 25.8%QoQ and 16.8%YoY on demand for restocking of products related to cars, especially HDI, which has a large backlog, while copper cost is still low and electricity cost is expected to come down. | Today’s reports | No InnovestX Equity report today | | Click here to read and/or download file Daily240109_E (1) |
