Market today | The SET rebound put it in an oversold position, which may continue for the short term. However, the market lacks a catalyst and the negative technical indicators mean recovery will be limited with resistances at 1395 and 1400. A breakthrough is needed to turn indicators positive. Lower bound is at supports of 1380 and 1370. | Today’s highlights | • January retail sales in the US slipped 0.8%MoM, worse than expected, leading the market to hope the Fed will consider reducing interest rates. • UK 4Q23 GDP contracted 0.3%YoY, the second quarter of contraction, indicating the UK may be entering a technical recession. • Japan 4Q23 GDP contracted 0.4%YoY, also the second quarter of contraction, suggesting Japan is also entering a technical recession and losing its status as the world's third-largest economy with a large GDP. • The IEA report on the oil market situation for Feb said global oil demand is expected to expand by only 1.2mn bbl/day in 2024, nearly half last year's expansion of 2.3mn bbl/day. • The digital wallet board met yesterday and no decision has been announced. The latest development involves the appointment of a legal committee to review English laws and suggestions from the National Anti-Corruption Commission within 30 days before presenting them again to the major economic board for further consideration and presentation to the Cabinet. • The Ministry of Finance is expediting solutions to address the flood of goods imported from China by implementing VAT collection on all imported items without reducing the exempted value, and will look for collection methods that will be more effective and prevent "leakage". • The Tourism Council of Thailand has concerns regarding the confidence index of tourism-related businesses in Thailand for 4Q23, with economic instability a risk factor that may impact Thai tourism in 1Q24 and result in less spending than pre-COVID. | Strategy today | In the short term the SET is expected to still be range-bound with no new catalyst. Investors await the gradual release of 4Q23 earnings, while US inflation is higher than expected. The strategy is “defensive and accumulate fundamental stocks to wait for the market recovery”. | Trading today | Weekly portfolio: In the short term the SET is expected to be range-bound, lacking catalysts and awaiting 4Q23 earnings results. We recommend “accumulate defensive and fundamental stocks to wait for market recovery” in three main themes: 1) Investors who are concerned about market fluctuations are recommended to invest in defensive stocks that are expected to beat the market with beta below 1 and price outperformance vs. the SET YTD – ADVANC, AOT, BDMS and TISCO. 2) Short-term investors (3-4 months) who want to invest in high-quality dividend stocks during dividend season, for stocks going XD between Mar–May 2024, with expected yield on 2023 (after deducting interim dividend) of over 5% - AP, BCP and KTB. Long-term investors who want to invest in high-quality dividend stocks to generate consistent cash flow, with dividend yield expected at over 5% on 2024, we suggest AH, AP, BCP, KTB, PTT and TTB. 3) Long-term investors are recommended to invest via DCA accumulation as now would be good timing since the SET has fallen significantly and risk is low and stocks are undervalued – BBL, BDMS, BEM, CPALL, PTT and SCC, all of which are in SET100 and are leaders in their industries with ESG ratings of AAA and AA, valuation lower than 10-year historical average and strong operating results. For the short term we recommend being cautious on stocks whose 4Q23 results may be weaker than expected – BJC, HMPRO, GLOBAL, ZEN, AU, CPF, BTG, AWC and SIRI. | Daily top picks | PTT: 4Q23 net profit beat expectations on extra gain; operating profit was Bt33.2bn, up 26%YoY and 6%QoQ. 1Q24 net profit is expected to improve QoQ from higher GRM and lower inventory loss. For the long term, its diversification will help stabilize profit. GULF: 4Q23 net profit was amplified by high FX gain and higher contribution from associates. 1Q24 net profit is expected to grow QoQ as industrial sector exits low season, boosting their demand for electricity. Another electricity generation unit, GULF PD (IPP) will start commercial operations in Mar 2024. | Today’s reports | IRPC – 4Q23: Net loss worse than expected LPN – 4Q23: Earnings plunge on margin, SG&A PTT – 4Q23: Above estimates on extra gains | | Click here to read and/or download file Daily240216_E
