Market today | Hopes the Fed will cut interest rate is still a catalyst. However, the index was not able to break through resistance between 1380-1385, limiting the upper bound to this point. The lower bound is at supports of 1370 and 1365, keeping movement between 1370-1385. | Today’s highlights | • Thomas Barkin, President of the Richmond Fed, along with several other Fed officials, believe the Fed should wait for inflation to slow further before deciding to cut interest rates. • Share prices of Chinese real estate developers rose yesterday, boosted by the Chinese government's plans to support the purchase of millions of unsold housing units worth over 675 billion yuan to stimulate the real estate sector. • Toshiba Corp. plans to cut more than 4,000 jobs through an early retirement program and will consolidate four of its subsidiaries into the parent company, aiming to reduce costs and revive its business. • The OFFO approved another reduction in the diesel subsidy, which will raise retail prices by Bt0.50/litre to Bt31.94/litre, effective May 17. This is expected to improve oil fund liquidity. • The Minister of Finance said in yesterday's discussion with the BoT, there was no talk of lowering interest rates, as this is the responsibility of the BoT and the MPC. However, he requested easier access to credit for the public, especially retail borrowers. The minister is also preparing to revise the inflation target range of 1-3%, which has been in use for 3-4 years. • Attention is on the NESDC announcement of 1Q24 GDP on May 20. TDRI expects pressure from the global economic slowdown to hurt exports, with delays in budget disbursement hindering economic drivers and high household debt slowing consumer spending. • REIC reported a sharp slowing in demand for the residential market in 1Q24, with housing unit transfers nationwide falling 13.8% and new housing loan growth declining 20.5% to the lowest in 25 quarters. | Strategy today | In the short term, the SET is expected to be range-bound as it focuses on the final week of 1Q24 earnings announcements, which are expected to show slow recovery. US and eurozone inflation will be reported this week but are not expected to decrease, and thus may pressure financial markets in the short term. However, production in China is expected to see gradual recovery. Our strategy is “Selective Buy”. | Trading today | The Thai capital market is expected to be range-bound as the market focuses on the final week of 1Q24 earnings announcements. We recommend “Selective Buy” with three main themes: 1) Speculation on 1Q24 earnings expected to grow YoY to be announced this week, while stock prices have not moved up much – AOT, BDMS, BEM, ERW, MINT, BCH and OSP. 2) For high-risk-takers and those who like to speculate on stocks whose 2Q24 profit is expected to grow YoY and QoQ – BEM, KCE, HMPRO, THRE and TIDLOR. 3) The situation in the Middle East has moderated, while crude oil inventory was higher last week than expected due to seasonal factors. For the base case of a shadow war, Brent is expected to be ~US$90/bbl. Therefore, having oil stocks will help hedge risk from Middle East tension. For high-risk-takers, we recommend an upstream oil stock – PTTEP. | Daily top picks | OSP: 2Q24 profit is expected to continue to be good, supported by high season for domestic energy drink sales and strong gross margin in response to control over expenses and lower commodity prices. We raise our 2024 profit forecast to Bt2.75bn (+14.7%) to accommodate the better cost management and sales recovery. ADVANC: 2Q24 profit is expected to grow YoY from higher tourism-related and mobile phone revenue and no significant increase in management expense as synergy on costs start to be felt. 2024 profit is expected to rise to Bt31.6bn (+10.9%). | Today’s reports | OSP (High conviction) – 1H24 looking excellent BCH – 1Q24: In line with estimates CENTEL – 1Q24: Beat estimates on strong hotel ops TIDLOR – Good earnings growth with upside on dividend | | Click here to read and/or download file Daily240517_E |
