Face negatives, lacks catalyst

An issue about a cut in electricity price yesterday pressured Utilities and the index, with pressure expected to ease today. The market also faces a weaker baht, leading to outflows and no catalyst, limiting index recovery to around resistance between 1380-1390; supports are at 1367 and previous low of 1360. A break below this would open more downside.

Today’s highlights

  • The Ministry of Commerce reports an increase in December 2024 inflation of 1.23%YoY, the ninth month of growth, pushed up by rising fuel prices and food and beverage costs. This gave a 2024 inflation rise of 0.4%YoY, meeting the target projection.
  • The BoT expects Thailand’s economy to continue to recover in 2025 but may show a K-shaped recovery pattern with uneven growth in some sectors. High uncertainty remains, and it sees the current policy rate of 2.25% appropriate for the current economic potential.
  • The BoT has updated Phase 2 of the household debt resolution program for non-bank business operators, saying it is now holding discussions regarding details, conditions, qualifications for participants and debt amounts. Clarity is expected in 1Q25.
  • The Expressway Authority of Thailand plans to push two investment projects for Cabinet approval this year for bidding, with total investment exceeding Bt30bn. Projects include Stage 3 Northern Expressway Section N2 (Prasert Manukit Road - Bangkok Outer Ring Road) and Kathu-Patong Expressway.
  • The government announced plans to reduce electricity costs by Bt3.70 to build public confidence. The PM will discuss this with public and private sectors, and is looking at several approaches that include discontinuing adder contracts upon expiration, extending the Ft cost repayment period for EGAT and requesting power producers to reduce profit margins.
  • Japan’s PM warns of potential consequences after President Biden blocked Nippon Steel's acquisition of US Steel Corp. The company is preparing to file a lawsuit against this US government decision.

Strategy today

In the short term, the SET is expected to move sideways between 1370-1410. Although Chinese economic figures are expected to recover, and the US economy is still strong, investors are waiting for Trump’s trade policies after he is inaugurated on Jan 20. Domestic factors are mixed on expectation of stimulus, which will be gradually released and start to show some results from the beginning of the year. However, the market may be pressured by the lack of any new catalyst and concerns over political stability, which may impact the direction of fund flows, while there is also selling of matured LTFs. Investment strategy is "Selective Buy".

Trading today

In the short term, the SET is expected to move sideways with no new catalyst, watching for political stability and Trump’s trade policies, while selling of matured LTFs will pressure fund flow. Investment strategy is "Selective Buy" across three themes with positive individual factors and one short-term trading idea:

  • Stocks benefiting from government consumption stimulus, Easy e-Receipt, running from Jan 16 to Feb 28, and a Bt10,000 handout around Chinese New Year: Commerce (CRC, HMPRO, CPALL and TNP), Consumption (CBG and OSP) and Tourism (MINT).
  • As an attraction to investors wishing to generate cash flow for their portfolios: stocks offering high dividend yield of over 3% on 2024 earnings, with strong balance sheets and continued growth in 2025 – AP, KTB, BBL and PTT.
  • Earnings plays: Stocks where 4Q24 profit is expected to grow YoY and QoQ and who regularly pay dividends – OSP, AMATA, AU, TIDLOR and BCP.
  • Trading idea for high-risk investors: stocks expected to benefit from China’s government stimulus – IVL and PTTGC.

Daily top picks

KTB: High dividend stock able to generate cash for portfolios while the stock market waits for a new catalyst. Dividend on 2024 is expected to be Bt1.06/share (paid once per year), giving yield of 4.9%. 4Q24 profit is expected to grow 50%YoY, the highest in the banking sector.

CPALL: 4Q24 is expected to be the best quarter of the year, growing YoY and QoQ from high season, strong same-store sales growth and higher margin driven by high-margin products. Additional stimulus and interest rate cut will increase upside to estimates.
