Daily top picks

Still weak, wait for US CPI

The SET lacks a new catalyst to change direction, with possibly a short-term rebound. Key to follow are US CPI tonight to evaluate the Fed’s interest rate direction and Trump’s inauguration next Monday; the market remains concerned about his trade policy. Upper bound is limited at 1350-1360, with next supports at 1330 and 1324.

Today’s highlights

  • TAT expects this Chinese New Year (Jan 24-Feb 2) to bring 1.35mn foreign tourists to Thailand and 2.22mn domestic trips, with projected circulation of ~Bt40bn, a 10% increase from 2024.
  • UTCC reports the Consumer Confidence Index for December 2024 at 57.9, the third month of an increase, supported by government economic stimulus that is helping ease economic troubles and tourism sector recovery.
  • The Minister of Finance said that on January 27, the second Bt10,000 handout will begin for citizens aged 60 and above who registered via PromptPay accounts. This is expected to boost this year's GDP growth by 0.07-0.1%.
  • AOT reports it is studying ways to promote regional airports to accommodate more aircraft and serve as bases for low-cost airlines, following the Minister of Transport's concept, to efficiently manage flight schedules and reduce congestion at Don Mueang and Suvarnabhumi airports.
  • Jake Sullivan, US National Security Advisor, says the next president is likely to continue Biden's strict AI chip control measures, citing security concerns about China's pursuit of advanced technology.
  • The EIA reports in its short-term energy outlook that US oil demand will remain at 20.5mn bbl/day in 2025-26, with production expected to increase to 13.55mn bbl/day in 2025, higher than the previous forecast of 13.52mn bbl/day.
  • Trump’s economic team is discussing gradual month-by-month tax increases to enhance negotiating power while helping avoid inflation spikes.

Strategy today

In the short term, the SET may recover with resistance at 1400. Although the market has underperformed the region due to concerns of political stability, ESG of listed companies and weak consumer confidence and auto exports, there is still hope of additional stimulus packages and cost-of-living cut schemes and Easy e-Receipt between Jan 16–Feb 28 that will help shore up 1Q25 profit. China 4Q24 GDP is expected to grow 5%, and US CPI is expected to accelerate from last month to 2.9%YoY. Overall, views of China stimulus packages and the Fed’s interest rate cut are unchanged and may not put further pressure on the Thai capital market. Investment strategy is "Selective Buy".

Trading today

In the short term, the SET is expected to recover but with limited upside, waiting for more stimulus and the US trade policy. Investment strategy is "Selective Buy" across three themes with positive individual factors and two short-term trading ideas:

  • Stocks benefiting from consumption stimulus, Easy e-Receipt, running from Jan 16 to Feb 28, and a Bt10,000 handout around Chinese New Year: Commerce (CRC, HMPRO, CPALL and TNP), Consumption (CBG and OSP) and Tourism (MINT).
  • As an attraction to investors wishing to generate cash flow for their portfolios: stocks offering high dividend yield of over 3% on 2024 earnings, with strong balance sheets and continued growth in 2025 – AP, KTB, BBL and PTT.
  • Earnings plays: Stocks where 4Q24 profit is expected to grow YoY and QoQ and who regularly pay dividends – OSP, AMATA, AU, TIDLOR and BCP.
  • Trading idea for high-risk investors: 1) stocks that benefit from new stimulus aimed at attracting foreign investment, infrastructure investment, an entertainment complex and reducing cost of living – Industrial Estates (WHA AMATA), Commerce (CPALL CRC), Tourism (AOT AWC); and 2) stocks whose prices are laggard, trading at 2025F PER lower than -1SD but profit expected to outperform – BTTG, BEM and BDMS.

Daily top picks

ADVANC: A defensive stock. 4Q24 core profit is expected to grow 23%YoY and 3%QoQ to Bt8.7bn, driven by growing service-related revenue and expense control. 2024 core profit is expected to be Bt34.3bn, growing 20% (8.5% above our estimation), while there may be upside to our 2025 outlook.

BBL: The stock is the most attractive among banks, trading at 2025 PER of 6.2x (peers are at 8.0x) and PBV of 0.48x (peers are at 0.8x). Asset quality risk is also the lowest among peers. 2024 profit is expected to grow 7%, followed by 3% growth in 2025 on lower credit cost and cost-to-income ratio and higher NIM and loans.
