MSCI Global Standard
Daily top picks
Expect to recover from a support
Trump’s plan to levy tariffs on automotive, pharmacy and semiconductors from Apr 2 has brought grave concerns across the globe pressured the US stock market into a sharp fall on Friday, which is expected to ripple out to the SET today. However, the index is close to supports of 1237 and 1230 and is expected to recover. Resistances are at 1255 and 1265. A break up will be positive.
Today’s highlights
• The World Bank believes that Phase 1 of the Bt10,000 handout may stimulate 2024 GDP by only 0.3% against budget expenditure of Bt145bn or 0.8% of GDP. It projects 2025 GDP growth at 2.9%, supported by tourism and private consumption, though recovery remains slower than at other ASEAN countries.
• The IMF agrees with the BoT's interest rate cut in October 2024 and recommends additional policy rate cuts to support inflation and debt serviceability. It is keeping its Thai 2025 GDP forecast at 2.9%.
• The US Consumer Sentiment Index in February by University of Michigan declined to 64.7, below market expectations. Inflation expectations for 1-year and 5-years ahead in February increased to 4.3% and 3.5% respectively, driven by the impact of Trump's tax measures.
• US preliminary Manufacturing PMI in February rose to 51.6, the highest in 8 months, while preliminary Services PMI fell to 49.7, the lowest in 25 months.
• The Russian state news agency RIA reports that the second round of Russia-US talks to end the Ukraine war will be held in two weeks in a neutral country; participating countries were not specified.
• Deputy Minister of Finance is talking with SWIFT's Head of ASEAN Region about international payment and transfer systems, inviting establishment of an operations center and a SWIFT-gpi project to promote Thailand as a financial hub.
• The Minister of Labor says Social Security Fund growth exceeded target at 5.34% in 2024 and set a return target of 8%, proposing to abandon old mindsets such as concerns about market vs non-market investments, suggesting openness to new ideas.
Strategy today
In the short term, the SET is expected to recover but with limited upside; key resistance is at 1300. Macro factors are expected to be the main factors pushing the index: the US PCE index, which is likely to slow to 2.5% and keep the Fed from changing its stance, and China manufacturing and services PMIs, which are gradually improving. The BoT’s stance is to keep interest rate unchanged at 2.5%, which the market has already largely incorporated. 1Q25 profit is expected to show that the Thai stock market passed bottom in 2H24. We expect foreign money flow to improve, while the SET’s revision trading measure is expected to improve confidentiality and ease some concerns. Investment strategy is "Selective Buy".
Trading today
The SET is expected to recover but upside is limited, with key resistance at 1300. We recommend strategies across three themes with positive individual factors and two short-term trading ideas:
1) Earnings plays whose prices do not reflect the profit growth expected in 4Q24-1Q25 both YoY and QoQ and are generally dividend payers – ADVANC, TRUE, AMATA, TIDLOR, MTC, AU and HTC.
2) Undervalued stocks in SET100 with strong fundamentals that are expected to be targets of mutual funds and have low downside risk due to: 1) YoY profit growth in 2025, 2) strong financial position and possible share buyback, 3) low valuation with PER and PBV 2025F below -1SD, and 4) regular dividends - BCP, AP, PTT, TU and SPALI.
3) Dividend plays that are expected have high dividend yield of above 3% for investors who want to generate cash flow on their portfolios – AP, KTB, BBL and PTT.
4) Trading idea for risk-takers: 1) stocks scheduled to release 4Q24 earnings with growth YoY and QoQ and expected to beat consensus – CPALL, HMPRO, BTG, ERW, AU and KLINIQ, and 2) stocks expected to benefit after MSCI rebalance. Recommend GPSC and SCGP, who have been included in Global Small Cap; be cautious on PTTGC and TOP, who have been removed from Global Standard.
Daily top picks
GPSC: It has short-term catalysts from a decline in natural gas price and bond yield and inclusion in the MSCI Global Small Cap Index (effective at market close on Feb 28). There are also catalysts from higher capacity, winning a bid in phase 2 of the green energy auction, and immunity to the global minimum tax.
BDMS: Seen as a defensive stock during high market volatility, with profit expected to continue to grow. 4Q24 core profit is expected to grow YoY from higher demand for medical services to bring 2024 core profit to Bt16.2bn, growth of 12.6%. Valuation is attractive, trading at 2024F PER of 23.6x and 2025F PER of 21.0x, lower than -2SD.
