MSCI Global Standard
Daily top picks
Trade war pressure is back
The SET is expected to be pressured by concerns over the onset of a trade war as Trump says he will levy 25% tariffs on Canada and Mexico, effective Mar 4, and plans to add another 10% to tariffs on imports from China. The MSCI rebalance, which is effective today, is also expected to cause volatility. The SET has resistances between 1190-1200, supports between 1225-1230.
Today’s highlights
• The Minister of Finance revealed plans to create an economic Master Plan after meeting with the Fiscal Policy Office, BoT, and NESDC. The plan will focus on Thailand's strengths, tourism, agriculture, and exports, targeting 2025 GDP growth of 3.0-3.5%, export growth of 3.5-4.0%, and 38mn foreign tourists.
• The SET President and Manager disclosed discussions with the Minister of Finance on strengthening Thai listed companies through the Jump Plus program. SET and partner agencies will provide data analysis tools, consulting services and increase awareness to enhance market attractiveness.
• Reuters reports the government is in discussions with auto manufacturers regarding a car trade-in and scrapping program. The Thai Auto Parts Manufacturers Association president says he is pushing strongly for this initiative.
• The second estimate of US 4Q24 GDP shows 2.3% QoQ growth, matching market expectations and down from 3.1% QoQ in the previous quarter.
• Trump is proceeding with 25% import tariffs on Canada and Mexico starting March 4 as originally planned. He signaled full implementation of retaliatory tax measures on April 2, along with an additional 10% import tax on Chinese goods.
• Russia announced a suspension of gasoline exports for 6 months from March 1 to August 31, 2025, to stabilize the domestic fuel market and prevent illegal exports of refined oil products.
• Trump has revoked Chevron's license to operate oil businesses in Venezuela, citing President Nicolas Maduro's government's lack of progress on election reforms and migrant repatriation, raising concerns about tightening global oil supplies.
Strategy today
In the short term, the SET is expected to recover but with limited upside; key resistance is at 1300. Macro factors are expected to be the main factors pushing the index: the US PCE index, which is likely to slow to 2.5% and keep the Fed from changing its stance, and China manufacturing and services PMIs, which are gradually improving, while the BoT surprised the market by cutting interest rate to 2.00%, bringing money flowing back into the market. 1Q25 profit is expected to show that the Thai stock market passed bottom in 2H24. We expect foreign money flow to improve, while the SET’s revision trading measure is expected to improve confidentiality and ease some concerns. Investment strategy is "Selective Buy".
Trading today
The SET is expected to recover but upside is limited, with key resistance at 1300. We recommend strategies across three themes with positive individual factors and two short-term trading ideas:
1) Earnings plays whose prices do not reflect the profit growth in 4Q24-1Q25 both YoY and QoQ and are generally dividend payers – ADVANC, TRUE, AMATA, TIDLOR, MTC, AU and HTC.
2) Undervalued stocks in SET100 with strong fundamentals that are expected to be targets of mutual funds and have low downside risk due to: 1) YoY profit growth in 2025, 2) strong financial position and possible share buyback, 3) low valuation with PER and PBV 2025F below -1SD, and 4) regular dividends - BCP, AP, PTT, TU and SPALI.
3) Dividend plays that are expected have high dividend yield of above 3% for investors who want to generate cash flow on their portfolios – AP, KTB, BBL and PTT.
4) Trading idea for risk-takers: 1) stocks scheduled to release 4Q24 earnings with growth YoY and QoQ and expected to beat consensus – CPALL, HMPRO, BTG, ERW, AU and KLINIQ, and 2) stocks expected to benefit after MSCI rebalance. Recommend GPSC and SCGP, who have been included in Global Small Cap; be cautious on PTTGC and TOP, who have been removed from Global Standard.
Daily top picks
PTT: There is a catalyst from rising oil price. 4Q24 profit came in slightly above estimates. It is paying a DPS on 2H24 of Bt1.30 (XD Mar 6), giving dividend yield of 4.1%. 1Q25 profit is expected to increase slightly QoQ from higher profit at the natural gas business.
LHHOTEL: Our top pick in REITs and IFFs. 4Q24 profit is expected to break a record high of Bt467mn, growing 46%YoY and 0.3%QoQ, driven by revenue from new investment asset in 4Q23 and seasonality. 1Q25 profit is expected to continue growing YoY on limited impact from Chinese tourists. 4Q24 dividend is expected to be Bt0.34.
