Daily top picks

Watch Trump’s speech

The SET is expected to be volatile. Watch Trump’s speech to Congress this morning (local time), expect a surprise. Domestically, follow inflation in Feb. The SET continues to move down to new lows. Although there might be a rebound, upper bound is limited. Support is at 1170-1165, while resistance is at 1185-1190.

Today’s highlights

• Canada announced a retaliatory tariff of 25% on imports from the US, effective March 4. China will impose an additional 10-15% tariff on some US imports starting March 10 and will temporarily suspend soybean imports from three US companies. Mexico is expected to announce its response to US import tariffs on Sunday.
• At 9 am local time), Trump will deliver his first speech to Congress since taking office, with all eyes on the potential direction of political and trade policies.
• The EU is discussing issuing bonds worth €150bn to support Ukraine, while the US has halted military aid to Ukraine. Russia has offered to help Trump negotiate with Iran, including on nuclear issues.
• Reuters reports that the US is planning to ease Russian sanctions, with instructions to review a list of Russian companies that could potentially be exempted before discussions with Russian representatives in coming days.
• Trump has informed the leaders of Japan and China that they cannot continue to devalue their currencies unfairly against the US and he may seek compensation through import tariffs on both countries.
• The Deputy Finance Minister views the continuous decline of the SET as a buying opportunity, saying that Thailand's economic fundamentals remain unchanged. He confirmed that most economic indicators are on an upward trajectory, including consumption, exports and financial stability metrics, which are expected to impact the economy in 1Q25, providing empirical evidence.

Strategy today

In the short term, recovery is limited by concerns over local political stability and slow GDP growth compared to neighbors. However, in terms of valuation the SET PER is between 12-13x which seems high compared to the region, but Thailand is seen to have a larger proportion in the service sector than others. The US economy is still strong although there are signs of a slowdown; the economy is supported by expectation of interest rate cuts by the Fed and ECB, which is expected to cut its rate by 25bps to 2.5% this week. China’s economy is still being supported by stimulus. Investment strategy is "Selective Buy".

Trading today

Domestic and trade war concerns are limiting any recovery of the SET. We recommend strategies across three themes with positive individual factors and two short-term trading ideas:
1) Undervalued stocks in SET100 with strong fundamentals that are expected to be targets of mutual funds and have low downside risk due to: 1) YoY profit growth in 2025, 2) strong financial position and possible share buyback, 3) low valuation with PER and PBV 2025F below -1SD, 4) regular dividends and 5) SETESG Ratings of A-AAA – CPALL, BDMS, MTC, MINT and BTG.
2) Dividend plays: 1) statistically, have paid dividends for 20 years and have SETESG Ratings of A-AAA, 2) dividend yield expected at 4% (excluding interim dividend) and payout ratio stable or rising and 3) strong profit in 2025 and upside to price of greater than 15% – AP, KTB, BBL, PTT, SPALI and KBANK.
3) Earnings plays whose prices do not reflect the profit growth in 1Q25 and are generally dividend payers – ADVANC, TRUE, AMATA, TIDLOR, MTC, AU and HTC.
4) Trading idea for risk-takers: 1) stocks benefiting from cyclic downtrend in interest rate – REITS (LHHOTEL, DIF), commerce (CPALL, CPAXT), property (AP, SIRI), banks (TISCO, KKP), leasing (MTC, TIDLOR) and utilities (GULF and GPSC) and 2) stocks benefiting from positive sentiment from Opportunity Day – CPALL, BCP, AMATA, KLINIQ.

Daily top picks

BTG: There is a catalyst from a drop in animal feed cost (corn and soybean meal) due to trade war concerns and abundant South America produce. 1Q25 core profit is expected to grow YoY and QoQ from higher swine price, lower animal feed cost and contribution from the new egg business in Singapore.

GPSC: There is a short-term catalyst from a drop in natural gas price. 2025 core profit is expected to grow 3.9%, driven by higher capacity, potential selection in the first round of Phase 2 of the renewable energy auction and unaffected by the global minimum tax.
