Volatile, full of uncertainty
The SET is expected to be volatile and may fall on Trump’s flip-flopping on tariffs, against a backdrop of higher geopolitical tension and political issues. The index is open to downside risk. Support is between 1180-1170, and resistance between 1200-1210.
Today’s highlights
• ECB voted to cut interest rates by 25bps for the 6th time since June 2024, bringing deposit and lending rates to 2.50% and 2.90% respectively, and signaled continued commitment to monetary policy easing.
• Bloomberg reports that Trump is planning to meet with tech industry leaders from companies like HP, Intel, IBM, and Qualcomm on March 10. Discussions are expected to focus on stricter tax measures that could impact hardware prices and supply chain disruptions.
• The US Secretary of Commerce said the US will exert pressure on Iran through sanctions to weaken its oil exports and pressure its currency.
• The US reported a record-high trade deficit in January, jumping 34% to US$131.4bn, exceeding market expectations, as US companies rushed imports ahead of potential tariffs on goods from trading partners.
• TCG announced that before this year's Songkran festival, it will launch a new loan guarantee service for pickup trucks to help solve loan rejection issues, stimulate the economy and boost vehicle production.
• UTCC reported that US tariff increases on imports from Canada, Mexico, and China are expected to indirectly impact Thailand by Bt20-25bn, or 0.1-0.5% of GDP. The automobile tax will affect Thailand by Bt60-65bn or 0.35-0.40% of GDP, resulting in GDP growth of only 2.6-2.8% this year.
• UTCC is requesting the setup of a special public-private team to deal with "Trump 2.0" policies, encouraging imports of US agricultural and food products to reduce trade pressure. It estimates Thailand could lose Bt100-150bn, or 0.5-0.7% of GDP.
Strategy today
In the short term, recovery is limited by concerns over local political stability and slow GDP growth compared to neighbors. However, in terms of valuation, the SET PER is between 12-13x which seems high compared to the region, but at the same time, Thailand has a larger proportion in the service sector than others. The US economy is still strong although there are signs of a slowdown; the economy is supported by expectation of interest rate cuts by the Fed and ECB, which is expected to cut its rate by 25bps to 2.5% this week. China’s economy is still being supported by stimulus. Investment strategy is "Selective Buy".
Trading today
Domestic and trade war concerns are limiting any recovery of the SET. We recommend strategies across three themes with positive individual factors and two short-term trading ideas:
1) Undervalued stocks in SET100 with strong fundamentals that are expected to be targets of mutual funds and have low downside risk due to: 1) YoY profit growth in 2025, 2) strong financial position and possible share buyback, 3) low valuation with PER and PBV 2025F below -1SD, 4) regular dividends and 5) SETESG Ratings of A-AAA – CPALL, BDMS, MTC, MINT and BTG.
2) Dividend plays: 1) statistically, have paid dividends for 20 years and have SETESG Ratings of A-AAA, 2) dividend yield expected at 4% (excluding interim dividend) and payout ratio stable or rising and 3) strong profit in 2025 and upside to price of greater than 15% – AP, KTB, BBL, PTT, SPALI and KBANK.
3) Earnings plays whose prices do not reflect the profit growth in 1Q25 and are generally dividend payers – ADVANC, TRUE, AMATA, TIDLOR, MTC, AU and HTC.
4) Trading idea for risk-takers: 1) stocks benefiting from a cyclic downtrend in interest rate – REITS (LHHOTEL, DIF), Commerce (CPALL, CPAXT), Property (AP, SIRI), Banks (TISCO, KKP), Leasing (MTC, TIDLOR) and Utilities (GULF and GPSC) and 2) stocks benefiting from positive sentiment from Opportunity Day – CPALL, BCP, AMATA, KLINIQ.
Daily top picks
BCH: Seen as a defensive stock. 2025 core profit is expected to be outstanding with growth of 15%, driven by: 1) hospital expansion and renovations, 2) hospital upgrade in Pathum Thani, 3) new services and 4) operational growth in its three new hospitals. Valuation is attractive, trading at a 2025F PER of 22.5x (-2SD).
GPSC: There is a short-term catalyst brought by a fall in natural gas cost. 2025 core profit is expected to grow 3.9%, driven by increased capacity, selection in the first round of phase 2 of the renewable power auction and no impact from global minimum tax.
