Cov.
Daily top picks
Range-bound,
wait for new catalyst
The SET is expected to be range-bound as surrounding factors remain the same, including Trump’s tariffs, concerns over the spread of a trade war with China and Canada. Today, follow the government’s economic policy meeting, where it is expected to discuss phase 3 of the digital wallet. Support is between 1190-1185 and resistance is between 1210-1215.
Today’s highlights
• China CPI in Feb fell 0.7%YoY, greater than market expectations. February PPI also fell 2.2% YoY, reflecting ongoing deflationary pressures in China. In the US, February non-farm payrolls added 151,000 positions, below market expectations, while the unemployment rate rose to 4.1%.
• Nasdaq plans to implement 24-hour trading during the 5-day workweek, expected to begin in 2H26 if approved by regulators and once the necessary infrastructure is in place.
• Today's economic stimulus board meeting is expected to consider Phase 3 of the digital wallet initiative with a budget of Bt175bn, halting sales of LTF mutual funds while increasing ThaiESG tax deductions to Bt600,000, relaxing LTV criteria for second home purchases and extending the validity of the reduced transfer and mortgage registration fees.
• The SET chairman announced that within 3-6 months, concrete measures will be implemented to restore capital market confidence, including legal reforms, long-term stock savings (TISA), the Jump+ project, share buybacks, relaxed listing requirements and tax benefits for small businesses and startups, and increased New Economy products. The PM, FM, SEC and SET are collaborating on measures to boost GDP growth to 3.5%, with initiatives expected to be finalized in March.
• Thailand's February inflation increased 1.08% YoY on higher prices for food, diesel and electricity. March inflation is expected to be similar to February, while average 2Q25 inflation is projected to grow only 0.5% off a high base.
• The Transport Minister plans to submit the "Housing for Thais" project to the Cabinet, seeking approval for construction in 4 areas and proposing a Phase 2 continuation to meet demand, with a target of steady expansion to create 100,000 housing units.
Strategy today
In the short term, the SET is expected to have some recovery driven by externals: the possible postponement of US tariffs for some products from Canada and Mexico, expectation for a stimulus package from China after the Two-Parliament meeting and US and China inflation, which are expected to be unchanged due to slowdowns in purchasing power and energy price and will lead the Fed to keep interest rate unchanged. Domestic issues to follow are political stability, additional stimulus, recovery of Chinese tourists in April and conditions for transferring LTF to new ThaiESG, which will reduce outflow from the market. Investment strategy is "Selective Buy".
Trading today
There are signs of recovery in the SET, driven by hopes from factors abroad and government’s plan to add stimulus. We recommend strategies across three themes with positive individual factors and two short-term trading ideas:
1) Undervalued stocks in SET100 that are expected to be targets of mutual funds: 1) YoY profit growth in 2025, 2) strong financial position and ability to service debt (interest coverage ratio >1), 3) low valuation: PER and PBV 2025F below -1SD,
4) regular dividends and 5) SETESG Ratings of A-AAA – CPALL, BDMS, MTC, MINT, BTG.
2) Dividend plays: 1) statistically, have paid dividends for 20 years and have SETESG Ratings of A-AAA, 2) dividend yield expected at 4% (excluding interim dividend) and payout ratio stable or rising and 3) strong profit in 2025 and upside to price of greater than 15% – AP, KTB, BBL, PTT, SPALI and KBANK.
3) Earnings plays whose prices do not reflect the profit growth in 1Q25 and are generally dividend payers – ADVANC, TRUE, AMATA, TIDLOR, MTC, AU and HTC.
4) Trading idea for risk-takers: stocks benefiting from positive sentiment from Opportunity Day this week –AU, TIDLOR, BTG and PTG.
Daily top picks
BTG: There is a catalyst to the stock price lying in growing profit as domestic swine price in 1Q25TD is continuing to rise (+18%YoY, +8%QoQ), driven by tight supply due to the earlier government moves to control supply, the spread of ASF in 3Q24-4Q24 and lower animal feed cost.
ADVANC: A defensive stock whose profit continues to grow. 1Q25 profit is expected to grow strongly YoY in tandem with more tourists and QoQ from lower marketing expense. 2025 profit is expected to be Bt38.5bn, growing 10.5%. There is an upside to profit from the upcoming license auction.
