Daily top picks
Continuing to climb,
sentiment brightening
The SET is expected to move up as sentiment brightens and confidence recovers. The Fed kept interest rate unchanged and signaled two rate cuts this year, which led bond yield down. If the index can break above 1200, it will be more positive. Support is at 1185-1175, with resistance at 1200-1210.
Today’s highlights
- FOMC kept interest rate at 4.25%-4.50% as expected by the market. In the Dot Plot, Fed officials signaled two interest rate cuts totaling 0.50ppt this year, unchanged from the report three months ago.
- The BoJ maintained its policy rate at 0.50% as expected. The BoJ needs more time to assess the impact of US tax policies on the export-dependent economy, while international uncertainties have rapidly increased.
- Phase 1 of the "Housing for Thai People" project has been postponed for Cabinet consideration next week to obtain more comprehensive details. Phase 2 will build 7,000 units in five areas: Km. 11, Kanchanaburi, Khon Kaen, Chonburi, and Chiang Mai.
- The BoT warned the concept of buying public debt and clearing credit bureau records must not create moral hazard problems. It proposed three principles for sustainable household debt resolution: encouraging financial discipline, supporting future access to credit and ensuring financial system stability.
- The THA says it does not support entertainment complex projects in major tourist provinces as they are already oversupplied. It suggests developing these in secondary provinces to create new destinations, recommending locations not far from Bangkok for convenient travel.
- The EIA reported that US crude oil stocks increased by 1.75mn bbl last week, higher than market expectations. Meanwhile, finished petroleum product stocks decreased, with diesel stocks down by 2.81mn bbl and gasoline down by 0.527mn bbl.
- The SET will post SP on GULF and INTUCH shares from March 21 to April 2 to allow alloca0tion of common shares before resuming trading in the market.
Strategy today
In the short term the SET is expected to see some recovery after a plunge of 16% YTD, the world’s worst performer, pressured by trade war concerns and no domestic catalyst. However, selling is expected to slow down thanks to ThaiESGX, which is expected to limit outflow from LTF, and brings hope of new inflow between May-June 2025. This week there are three monetary policy meetings in three central banks: the BoJ, FOMC and BoE. BoJ and FOMC kept interest rate unchanged, and BoE is also expected to do so. Investment strategy is "Selective Buy".
Trading today
The SET is expected to see some recovery as selling slows and ThaiESGX becomes clearer. We recommend strategies across three themes with positive individual factors:
- Stocks expected to be targets of ThaiESGX: 1) 2025 profit expected to grow YoY, 2) strong financial position and 3) likelihood of steady dividends, with dividend yield in 2025 of at least 3%; of interest in SET50 are ADVANC, BBL, BDMS, CPALL and PTT and in the SET100, AP, BCH and BTG.
- Dividend plays: 1) statistically, have paid dividends for 20 years and have SETESG Ratings of A-AAA, 2) dividend yield expected at 4% (excluding interim dividend) and payout ratio stable or rising and 3) strong profit in 2025 and upside to price of greater than 15% – AP, KTB, BBL, SPALI and KBANK.
- Undervalued stocks in SET100 that are expected to be targets of mutual funds with: 1) YoY profit growth in 2025, 2) strong financial position and ability to service debt (interest coverage ratio >1), 3) low valuation with PER and PBV 2025F below -1SD,
4) regular dividend payers and 5) SETESG Ratings of A-AAA – CPALL, BDMS, MTC, MINT and BTG.
Daily top picks
MINT: Seen as undervalued and expected to be a target of the ThaiESGX fund, with SETESG rating of AA. 2025 core profit is expected to grow 10% to Bt9.2bn. 1Q25 is expected to report only slight growth in core profit (+YoY, -QoQ), with low season in Europe offset by domestic high season and lower financial cost.
CPALL: This stock is expected to be a target of the ThaiESGX fund, given its SETESG rating of AAA. 1Q25 profit is expected to grow YoY driven by higher SSS and margin, while 2025 profit growth is expected to be the second highest in the Commerce sector at 16%, 11% from higher sales and margin in CVS and 5% from CPAXT.
