Daily top picks
Div. Yield 4.3%
Expected to move up
The SET is expected to move up on eased trade war concerns after Trump signal some flexibility on tit-for-tat tariffs. Today is the first day of the no-confidence debate against the PM. The index has a significant level of 1200, with support at 1175-1170 and resistance at 1195-1200.
Today’s highlights
- Trump signaled some flexibility on the retaliatory tariffs scheduled to take effect on April 2, and plans to speak with President Xi Jinping after China announced tariffs on US agricultural imports.
- ECB is calling for the formation of a trade bloc to reduce the impact from the trade war, estimating that the 25% US tariffs on European imports would slice 0.3% off the eurozone economy and a higher 0.5% if Europe retaliates.
- The Commerce Ministry reports Thailand's 14% YoY growth in February export value, the eighth month of growth; import value rose 4% YoY; there was a trade balance surplus of US$1.99bn. Exports in 1Q25 are expected to grow in double digits, with full-year 2025 growth forecast to exceed the 3% target.
- The Treasury has launched the "pickup with Treasury guarantee" project through the Thai Credit Guarantee Corporation, providing Bt5bn credit guarantee for pickup truck loans to support lending and assist people and SMEs, expected to bring sales of 6,250 trucks. Applications will be accepted from April 1-Dec 30.
- KTB and TTB have denied rumors of a merger, saying no such action is being contemplated in their five-year plans, stating each is following its own established growth strategies.
- Bloomberg survey of analysts indicates Thailand will implement the largest interest rate cuts in ASEAN to cope with the trade war, ranging from 0.75bps to 1 pp in 2026.
- ThaiBMA reports a decrease in the issuance of real estate corporate bonds since early 2025 in the high yield segment to Bt2.8bn from nearly Bt10bn in the same period last year, while the investment grade segment increased to levels similar to last year. Investors are cautious about private sector quality amid economic stagnation and high interest rates.
Strategy today
In the short term the SET is expected to recover after factoring in most of the negatives, falling 15% YTD, underperformed world markets. China’s economic figures and stimulus are expected to support the investment climate, while central bank stances are expected to be more dovish and reduce impact and volatility arising out of US tariffs that is damaging consumer confidence. Follow the no-confidence debate against the Prime Minister between Mar 24-26. Investment strategy is "Selective Buy".
Trading today
In the short term, the SET is expected to be volatile, with upside hinging on China's economic data and the Fed’s stance. Domestic factors include the BoT meeting. Investment strategy is "Selective Buy" across three themes with positive individual factors and one short-term trading idea:
- Stocks with high dividend yield and expected to be targets of the Vayupak and tax-deductible funds (SSF, RMF and ThaiESG) and with these characteristics: dividend yield of at least 3.5%, high SETESG ratings and high CG and earnings expected to grow - ADVANC, AP, BBL, BDMS and HMPRO.
- Stocks benefiting from government consumption and tourism stimulus: Commerce (CPALL, CRC, HMPRO and TNP) and Tourism (AWC, AOT and MINT).
- Earnings plays: Stocks whose 4Q24 profit is expected to grow YoY and QoQ, and which we tag Outperform – GULF, OSP, AMATA, AU, TIDLOR and BCP.
- Trading Idea for high-risk investors: Stand to benefit from lower interest rates - 1) REITs (LHHOTEL, FTREIT and DIF), 2) Retail (CPALL), 3) Banks (TISCO, KKP) with high HP loans or stocks that are recovering but prices lag - BEM, BDMS, MINT, AP.
Daily top picks
BBL: BBL is expected to be a target for ThaiESGX with SETESG rating of AAA and our top bank pick. It has the most attractive valuation, lowest quality asset risk and highest loan growth. The stock is also paying a DPS of Bt6.50, XD Apr 23, giving dividend yield of 4.3%.
TU: Price has a short-term catalyst from a sign of some flexibility in the US tariffs. 1Q25 profit is expected to fall QoQ on seasonality and YoY from transformation and higher marketing expense. A share buyback program running from Jan 2 to Jun 30, 2025 (56% already purchased) helpd limit stock price downside.
