Market today | The SET is expected to be range-bound with resistances at 1386 and 1395, while supports are at 1370 and 1360, as investors are waiting for the release of preliminary 4Q23 US GDP in order to try to assess the Fed’s interest rate direction. | Today’s highlights | • US composite PMI in Jan rose sharply to a seven-month high, supported by expansion in new orders and employment, with business confidence at its highest in 20 months. • The PBOC announced plans to reduce the Reserve Requirement Ratio (RRR) in early Feb. This will release back into the system a portion of funds previously set aside, in order to promote lending and stimulate the Chinese economy. • EIA reported a decrease in US crude oil inventories of 9.2mn bbl last week, far exceeding the expected drop of 2.1mn bbl, indicating strong demand in the market. • Netflix's 4Q23 results showed revenue of US$8.83bn, surpassing market expectations. It also raised its 2024 revenue forecast to growth of 24% from the previously estimated 22-23%. • Tesla reported lower-than-expected profit in 4Q23 on narrowed margins. Additionally, Tesla EV drivers in China are facing travel restrictions to government-related locations for data security reasons. • Alibaba Group Holding's stock price reached a six-month high following Jack Ma's purchase of company shares. This was a positive factor amid a volatile stock market. • The Prime Minister is preparing economic stimulus measures in view of the lower GDP growth and these will not include a digital wallet. The Office of the NESDC revised its 2023 GDP growth estimate to 1.8%, citing a continuous 14-month contraction in the industrial production sector. This indicates a sustained but non-crisis slowdown in Thailand's economic expansion. | Strategy today | In the short-term the Thai stock market is likely to continue to be pressured by externals as hopes of a reduction in interest rate by the Fed fade after US figures for inflation, employment and manufacturing were not bad as expected. This means risky asset markets are likely to rest in the short term; at home, the market lacks a new catalyst. The strategy is “defensive and accumulate fundamental stocks to wait for the market recovery”. | Trading today | Weekly portfolio: In the short term the SET is expected to be fragile and still pressured by externals while still lacking domestic catalysts to stimulate investment. We recommend “accumulate defensive and fundamental stocks to wait for the market recovery” in two main themes: 1) Medium-term investors who want to invest in high-quality dividend stocks with the following criteria: has paid a consistent dividend for at least 10 years, has SET ESG ratings of AAA or AA, with dividend yield of above 5% after deducting 2023 interim dividend and 2024 profit is expected to grow YoY - AP, BCP and KTB. 2) For long-term investors, we recommend DCA investment as it offers the best opportunity after the SET fell, reducing risk significantly, in stocks with undervalued stock price – BBL, BDMS, BEM, CPALL, PTT and SCC, all in SET100 and leaders in their industry with SET ESG Rating of AAA and AA, valuation below 10-year average and strong operating results. In the medium term we recommend being cautious on stocks that are set to be affected by El Nino, which will erode purchasing power in the agricultural sector: Finance (MTC, SAWAD), Automotive (SAT, STANLY), Beverages (CBG has high sugar cost) and Food & Agriculture (CPF GFPT and BTG). | Daily top picks | TU: Exiting from its investment in Red Lobster will burden 4Q23 profit but be a plus to 2024. It is expected to report a net loss of Bt13.8bn in 2023 due to the impairment expense of Bt18.5bn and then turn around to a net profit of Bt5.7bn in 2024 on a higher margin for the seafood business and no more losses contributed by Red Lobster. ADVANC: 4Q23 core profit is forecast at Bt7.4bn. Although expected to decline 1.9%QoQ due to the purchase of 700MHz and 3BB and higher SG&A, core profit is expected to grow 9.6%YoY upon a recovery in revenue, less competition in the mobile phone and FBB businesses and expense control. | Today’s reports | CPF – Preview 4Q23F: Losses to continue SCC – 4Q23: Misses estimates on impairment | | Click here to read and/or download file Daily240125_E |
