Market today | The SET continues to show signs of weakening, falling close to support of 1360. A fall below that is a negative indicator with the next support at 1354. Overall technical indicators are still negative, with resistances at 1370 and 1375. | Today’s highlights | • Neel Kashkari, President of the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis, stated he wants to see more data over the next several months to ensure inflation is slowing before supporting a cut in interest rate. He did not rule out the possibility the Fed will raise rate further if inflation picks up again. • Yesterday, NVDIA hit a record high, likely due to speculation on an upcoming 10:1 stock split and optimism that it will become a major supplier of AI chips to companies like xAI. Apple's stock also rose after iPhone shipments in China rebounded 52% in April following price cuts by Apple and Chinese retailers earlier this year. • The cabinet approved measures and guidelines for visa exemptions to promote tourism and stimulate the economy, such as allowing visa-free stays of up to 60 days. Rules were also adjusted for foreign students and retirees wanting to stay in Thailand. The Ministry of Finance is preparing short-term economic stimulus measures such as debt restructuring for households to reduce monthly payments and extend repayment periods, as well as expanding credit guarantees from the Thai Credit Guarantee Corporation. • The Ministry of Finance approved a two-year delay in the implementation of new accounting standards (TFRS 9) for specialized state financial institutions, from the original 2025 target to 2027, to allow state banks more time to adjust to the new standards. • The TAT reported a 4.3%WoW increase in foreign tourist arrivals from May 20-26, bringing the cumulative number of visitors from Jan 1-May 26 to over 14.3mn, generating around Bt683bn in revenue. The top 5 source markets were China, Malaysia, Russia, India and South Korea. | Strategy today | In the short term the SET is range-bound, with nothing to influence direction. The first economic cabinet meeting released no new stimulus. Economic data is expected to slow down. Externally, follow US April PCE, which is expected to already be in the market, and China manufacturing PMI in April, which is expected to improve after a steady influx of stimulus. 1Q24 profit globally was still good although growth was small in Thai companies, but 2Q24 is expected to be better, giving support to the SET from 3Q24. Our strategy is “Selective Buy”. | Trading today | The Thai capital market is expected to be range-bound with no new factor to influence. However, 2Q24 profit is expected to improve for many companies, which will support the SET. We recommend “Selective Buy” with three main themes: 1) Stocks which are expected to benefit from a recovery in manufacturing, especially in China, whose profits have passed bottom while stock price has yet to reflect the good picture – KCE, SCGP and PTTGC. 2) Stocks whose 2Q24 net profit is expected to grow YoY and QoQ, with attractive valuations– MINT, ADVANC, TU, BEM, CPF, BTG, OSP and TIDLOR. 3) Tension has eased about the situation in the Middle East, leading Brent down to the lower bound of US$80-90/bbl, which is seen as an opportunity to hedge. For high risk takers, we recommend an upstream oil stock – PTTEP. Follow the OPEC+ online conference on June 2 regarding oil production policy. | Daily top picks | PTTEP: The short-term rise in oil price is a catalyst to stock price. This hedges risk from the Middle East tension, while profit and balance sheet are strong. 2Q24 profit is expected to grow from higher oil price and a new high for sales volume. ADVANC: 2Q24 profit is expected to grow YoY off steady growth in tourism-related and mobile phone revenue. SG&A is not expected to go up significantly as cost synergy begins to be felt. 2024 profit is expected to grow to Bt31.6bn (+10.9%YoY). | Today’s reports | Petrochemicals – Product spread crawled up WoW GPSC – Benefit from restructure of gas price | | Click here to read and/or download file Daily240529_E |
