|---|
Market today | The market still has no new factor to influence its direction, with investors waiting for the FOMC meeting. This led the SET to be range-bound between 1360-1380. It will wait for a breakout from the bound that will provide a clearer direction, with resistance at 1386 and support at 1353. | Today’s highlights | • US job openings (JOLTS) in Dec rose to 9.026mn, exceeding expectations and reflecting a labor market too strong for the Fed to consider reducing interest rates in March. • The IMF forecasts global economic growth of 3.1% in 2024, an increase from the October 2023 projection of 2.9%. This is supported by US expansion and China's fiscal stimulus measures. Global inflation is expected to be 5.8% in 2024, down from 6.8% last year, and is projected to fall to 4.4% in 2025. • China's 10-year government bond yield dropped to a 22-year low of 2.47%, expecting the PBOC to continue monetary easing amidst a fragile economic recovery and significant stock market sell-offs. • Saudi Aramco has halted its plan to increase crude oil production capacity from 12mn to 13mn barrels per day following an order from Saudi Arabia's Ministry of Energy to maintain maximum sustainable production levels. • The Ministry of Tourism in Thailand reported a total of 2.74mn tourists from Jan 1-28, generating revenue of approximately Bt133bn, with the top five origins being China, Malaysia, South Korea, Russia, and India. • The Government Housing Bank targets mortgage lending of Bt240bn for the year, 3% growth. It signaled an immediate interest rate cut following the BoT and is preparing a new real estate stimulus to propose to the government in February. • At 2:00 PM today, all eyes are on the Constitutional Court as it delivers its verdict on the case against the Move Forward Party for allegedly attempting to overthrow the government. | Strategy today | In the short-term global stock markets will move up as economic figures and profit are good as expected and less hope the Fed will cut interest rate. The FOMC meeting this week is expected to show no signal of cutting interest rate in March. The Thai stock market is expected to be pressured by concerns on weak 4Q23 profit for Thai companies and the lack of a new catalyst. The strategy is “defensive and accumulate fundamental stocks to wait for the market recovery”. | Trading today | Weekly portfolio: In the short term the SET will be pressured by expected weak 4Q23 operating results and the lack of a new catalyst. We recommend “accumulate defensive and fundamental stocks to wait for the market recovery” in three main themes: 1) Short-term investors (3-4 months) who want to invest in high-quality dividend stocks during dividend season, for stocks going XD between Mar–May 2024, with expected yield on 2023 (after deducting interim dividend) of over 5% - AP, BCP and KTB. For long-term investors who want to invest in high-quality dividend stocks to generate consistent cash flow, with dividend yield expected at over 5% on 2024 - AH, AP, BCP, KTB, PTT and TTB. 2) Investors who are concerned about market fluctuations are recommended to invest in defensive stocks that are expected to beat the market with beta below 1 and price outperformance vs. the SET YTD – ADVANC, AOT, BDMS and TISCO. 3) Long-term investors are recommended to invest via DCA accumulation as now would be good timing since the SET has fallen significantly and risk is low and stocks are undervalued – BBL, BDMS, BEM, CPALL, PTT and SCC, all of which are in SET100 and are leaders in their industries with ESG ratings of AAA and AA, valuation lower than 10-year historical average and strong operating results. In the medium term we recommend being cautious on stocks that are set to be affected by El Nino, which will erode purchasing power in the agricultural sector: Finance (MTC, SAWAD), Automotive (SAT, STANLY), Beverages (CBG has high sugar cost) and Food & Agriculture (CPF GFPT and BTG). | Daily top picks | BDMS: Price is expected to continue to outperform, supported by strong profit. 4Q23 core profit is estimated at Bt3.6bn (up 16%YoY but -7%QoQ), followed by 8% growth in core profit in 2024. Valuation is low at 2024 PER of 29x, below -2S.D. GPSC: In the short term the company benefits from a fall in European natural gas price and bond yield while working to adjust electricity sales contracts for industrial customers to be based on gas price to reduce the volatility brought by changes in Ft, which does not align with cost. The stock is trading at 2024 PBV of 1.1x, at -1S.D. | Today’s reports | Petrochemicals – Higher naphtha cost hurt spread MST – 4Q23: Missed on ECL PTTEP – 4Q23: Beats estimates | | Click here to read and/or download file Daily240131_E |
