1Q25: Beat estimates on cement, packaging

SCC reported a 1Q25 net profit of Bt1.1bn, beating INVX and consensus on a better performance than anticipated in the cement and packaging businesses. 1Q25 core earnings accounted for 12% of our full-year forecast, and we expect things to continue to improve in 2Q25 on higher government spending and the raise in cement price. We maintain our Neutral rating with end-2025 TP of Bt192 based on SOTP valuation (8x EV/EBITDA for the chemical and packaging businesses, 9x EV/EBITDA for the cement business, and 1.5x PBV for associates).

SCC reported a net profit of Bt1.1bn in 1Q25, recovering from a loss of Bt512mn in 4Q24 but still down 54.7% YoY, beating INVX by 24% and consensus by 63% on better earnings than expected from the cement business and SCGP. The biggest factor was the cement & building materials (CBM) business, which shot up 24% to profit of Bt2.2bn, recovering from a loss of Bt147mn in 4Q24, thanks to the return of government spending and an increase in cement price of Bt400/ton in early March 2025. The chemicals business continued in the red to the tune of Bt2.95bn, a larger loss YoY since LSP petrochemical plant started up in September 2024, but a smaller loss QoQ due to the halt in production, which reduced overhead costs.

2Q25 to be driven by the cement business. 1Q25 core earnings accounted for only 12% of our full-year core earnings forecast, but we expect a steady rise in core earnings, backed by CBM, which will fully benefit from the cement price increase from 2Q25 onwards, as well as cost reduction. We also expect an increase in equity income in 2Q25 as SCC will record a one-time gain from a goodwill adjustment related to Chandra Asri’s (30% owned) acquisition of the refinery complex from Shell Singapore. However, we expect core earnings to still decline YoY, dragged down by lower chemical business performance impacted by the full recording of depreciation and interest expenses for the LSP project, as well as a weaker packaging business due to softer packaging demand and ASP.

SCC management continues a short-term action plan focused on cutting costs, increasing production efficiency and decreasing working capital to maximize cash reserves, as well as plans to close or sell non-performing businesses.

Chemicals biz remains under pressure from low spreads, which are expected to remain low due to weak demand stemming from US tariff uncertainty, while supply continues to increase, particularly in China. The US-China tariff war also warrants close monitoring, as Chinese ethane crackers import 5-6mn tons of ethane from the US and propane (60% of total propane imports) from the US.

Cement to take a leading role. CBM is showing a relatively positive trend in 2025, driven by increased demand for cement after the government resumed spending and repairs following the earthquakes in Thailand and Myanmar, coupled with the cement price increase implemented in early March 2025. Demand is expected to continue strong in Vietnam due to government stimulus packages, while coal prices remain on a downward trend.

Key risks are higher costs from inflationary pressure and exchange rate volatility as well as oversupply in the cement and chemical businesses.
