Fajar Paper
SCGP reported net profit of Bt1.0bn, beating INVX by 8% and the market by 5%. Core earnings fell YoY on weak packaging demand, but inched up QoQ on better coal costs. We expect core earnings to be flat HoH in 2H25, driven by cost savings and debt restructuring at Fajar Paper. There is a potential downside risk on a hike in US import tariffs, as 4% of SCGP revenue has direct US exposure and price war in Indonesia. Thus, we maintain our Neutral rating with an end-2025 TP of Bt17.5, based on 20x PE or -1.5 SD of 3-year mean.
2Q25 net profit fell YoY but grew slightly QoQ. SCGP reported a net profit of Bt1.01bn in 2Q25, 8% above our forecast and 5% above market consensus, on extraordinary items. Stripping out the extraordinary items shows a core profit of Bt993mn, in line with our estimates. Core earnings grew 8% QoQ but still fell 33% YoY in 2Q25. The YoY decline in profit stemmed from a cut in revenue on a fall in packaging paper prices in response to a slowdown in demand volume, especially as China – a major importer of packaging paper in the region - cut imports of packaging paper. Additionally, prices of short fiber pulp and dissolving pulp fell YoY. Core profit rose 8% QoQ on a 12% QoQ decrease in coal costs.
Fajar Paper achieved EBITDA breakeven in 2Q25, at IDR31bn, up from a negative EBITDA of IDR55bn in 1Q25. This was driven by a 2% QoQ increase in ASP, even though order volume slipped by 2% QoQ (exports -46% QoQ, but domestic +11% QoQ) in 2Q25. The focus on domestic sales reflected the exit of its fourth competitor from the market.
Announced interim dividend on 1H25. SCGP announced an interim DPS of Bt0.25 on 1H25, representing a 56% payout ratio and an annualized dividend yield of 2.8%. XD is on August 8, 2025.
Core earnings for 1H25 accounted for 53% of our full-year estimate. SCGP does face downside from US import tariffs, as it has direct exports to the US at 4% of total sales (as of 2Q25) and indirect exports at 3% of total sales. We conducted a sensitivity analysis on SCGP's direct exports to the US and found that a US import tariff of 36% - if not passed on to customers - would slice 10-12% off our full-year 2025 profit estimate.
Expect flat core earnings HoH in 2H25. We expect 2H25 core profit to be flat HoH, in line with company expectations. We expect a slight slowing in sales volume as sales return to normal in 2H25 after accelerating to serve restocking demand during the 90-day pause of the US import tariffs in 1H25. This is expected be offset by the cost savings program and Fajar's debt restructuring, which is expected to save Bt250-300mn per year in interest expenses starting July 2025. Additionally, we foresee a small increase in domestic selling prices in Indonesia. However, we see downside risk for our 2025-26 earnings forecasts on the US tariff impact and the leader paper packaging Indonesia market share (Asian Pulp & Paper), which is currently in the process of increasing its production capacity by 2.4mn tons per year to COD this year, might initiate another price war to the industry and will impact to Fajar paper operation.
Action & recommendation. We maintain our Neutral rating with an end-2025 TP of Bt17.5, based on 20x 2025 PE or -1.5SD of 3-year PE mean. We expect no near term earnings upgrade with the potential downside from higher US import tariffs.
Key risks are a continued slow pace in China’s economy and geopolitical unrest raising coal cost. Key ESG risks are energy management, sustainability products, and high greenhouse gas emissions (E).
