Daily top picks

Limited recovery, Watch the Fed’s speech

The SET is expected to continue to be pressured by trade war concerns; it will be closed tomorrow. Keys to follow are the Fed chair's speech to US congress tonight and US inflation tomorrow, which will influence interest rate direction. Upper bound is around 1280-1290, while support is between 1250-1260.

Today’s highlights

• President Trump announced 25% import tariffs on steel and aluminum for all countries without exceptions, and plans to announce reciprocal tariffs within 2 days.
• President Trump is addressing Treasury debt settlements with concerns about potential hidden issues, such as fraud evidence and wasteful spending, estimating that public debt may not reach US$36tn or 120% of GDP.
• Malaysian Palm Oil Board reveals domestic production remains strong despite recent floods, and assesses that demand in key markets like India and China remains stable, while European demand remains steady due to EUDR delays, eliminating the need for rushed stockpiling.
• The Ministry of Finance will meet with the American Chamber of Commerce in Thailand, which expressed concerns about taxes, energy, etc., including proposals to increase imports of American goods, which requires consideration of which can be increased.
• SET sees Thai stock market volatility and pressure from foreign sentiment and LTF selling pressure, will discuss with Finance Minister about plans to stimulate the Thai stock market, proposing to adjust ThaiESG fund conditions to match former LTF conditions, as most capital is flowing into debt instruments.
• Green Bonds, which have high growth potential, are recommended as a funding alternative for infrastructure development, production efficiency improvement, and business model transformation toward environmental friendliness.
• The Ministry of Finance says that former Permanent Secretary Somchai Sujjapongse's name has been submitted to the selection committee for BoT's board chairman position. It expects the committee for selecting new BoT Governor to replace the current one (whose term ends in September) to be formed in March.

Strategy today

In the short term, the SET is expected to recover, though upside is limited; main resistance is at 1320. There are supports from external factors as immediate trade war concerns ease and investors expect strong US company earnings. At home, however, there still are no new catalysts, with consumer confidence expected to slow down despite government stimuli. The Thai capital market is thus expected to underperform world markets. Investment strategy is "Selective Buy".

Trading today

The SET is expected to recover with limited upside and main resistance at 1320. We recommend investment strategies across three themes with positive individual factors and two short-term trading ideas:
1) Earnings plays whose prices have not reflected the growth expected in 4Q24-1Q25 profit both YoY and QoQ and are highly likely to pay regular dividends – ADVANC, TRUE, AMATA, TIDLOR, MTC, AU and HTC.
2) Real sector stocks in SET100 with strong fundamentals that are expected to be targets of mutual funds and have low downside risk due to: 1) YoY profit growth in 2025, 2) strong financial position, high liquidity and possible share buy-back (PBV < 1x), 3) low valuation with PER and PBV 2025F lower than -1SD, and 4) potential to pay regular dividends with 2025F yield of at least 5% - BCP, AP, PTT, TU and SPALI.
3) Stocks that benefit from stimulus, Easy e-Receipt and Bt10,000 handout phase two – Commerce (CRC, HMPRO, TNP) and tourism (MINT, AWC, ERW, AOT).
4) Trading idea: for risk takers 1) Stocks scheduled to release 4Q24 earnings next week and expected to grow YoY and QoQ – AOT and MINT; and 2) stocks expected to raise dividend payout, or undertake share buy-back as PBV < 1x with high liquidity – PTT, KBANK, BBL and KTB.

Daily top picks

PTTEP: Oil price will go up for the short term after US plans new sanction on Iran’s crude oil export, which will be a catalyst to the stock price. Although 2025 profit is expected to weaken, the balance sheet is still strong (IBD/E lower than 0.3x), and the stock is an asset for hedging risk from the Middle East conflict.

AMATA: 2024 land sales reached a new high of 3,018 rai, growing by 63% and expected to drive 2024 net profit to Bt2,769mn, growing by 47%. 4Q24 net profit is expected to grow by 91%YoY and 71%QoQ, while there is a backlog worth of Bt21bn which will support 2025-2026 growth.
