Daily top picks
Div. Yield 2%
Recovery still limited
Trump’s tariff moves still pressure the market, while the Fed is not in a hurry to cut interest rate, as seen in the chairman’s testimony to Congress. Moreover, US CPI in Jan was higher than expected. SET recovery is limited with resistances of 1290 and 1300, while support is between 1260-1270.
Today’s highlights
• US CPI for January rose 3.0% YoY and Core CPI increased 3.3% YoY, higher than market expectations, confirming the Fed's stance of a measured cut in interest rates as inflation remains above target.
• The Fed Chairman emphasized commitment to bringing down inflation and sees cutting interest rates as not urgent. The US economy remains strong while inflation is moderating but still above the Fed's 2% target, indicating no immediate need for monetary policy easing.
• The president of the Thai Hotels Association reports the January accommodation confidence index shows most hotel businesses in 2025 are concerned about a global economic slowdown, followed by rising costs for labor, energy and raw materials, as well as intense price competition.
• The Social Security Fund is implementing major investment portfolio strategy changes, increasing risk asset allocation with 40% in foreign investments and 60% in Thailand. It is targeting 5% returns this year, focusing on US, European, and Japanese markets, while adopting a trading strategy for Thai stocks.
• The Minister of Finance says the Ministry is considering policy updates for Long-term Equity Funds (LTF), either setting up new ones or transferring all existing LTFs, currently valued at ~Bt180bn, into a new Thai ESG fund.
• MSCI announced its quarterly index review, effective at closing prices on February 28. In MSCI Global Standard, no stocks were added while two stocks were removed (PTTGC and TOP). In MSCI Global Small Cap, 4 stocks were added and 11 were removed.
• Trump had phone discussions with Presidents Putin and Zelenskyy about resolving the war, easing market concerns about oil supply.
Strategy today
In the short term, the SET is expected to recover, though upside is limited; main resistance is at 1320. There are supports from external factors as immediate trade war concerns ease and investors expect strong US company earnings. At home, however, there still are no new catalysts, with consumer confidence expected to slow down despite government stimuli. The Thai capital market is thus expected to underperform world markets. Investment strategy is "Selective Buy".
Trading today
The SET is expected to recover with limited upside and main resistance at 1320. We recommend investment strategies across three themes with positive individual factors and two short-term trading ideas:
1) Earnings plays whose prices have not reflected the profit growth expected in 4Q24-1Q25 both YoY and QoQ and are highly likely to pay regular dividends – ADVANC, TRUE, AMATA, TIDLOR, MTC, AU and HTC.
2) Real sector stocks in SET100 with strong fundamentals that are expected to be targets of mutual funds and have low downside risk due to: 1) YoY profit growth in 2025, 2) strong financial position, high liquidity and possible share buy-back (PBV < 1x), 3) low valuation with PER and PBV 2025F lower than -1SD, and 4) potential to pay regular dividends with 2025F yield of at least 5% - BCP, AP, PTT, TU and SPALI.
3) Stocks that benefit from stimulus, Easy e-Receipt and Bt10,000 handout phase two – Commerce (CRC, HMPRO, TNP) and tourism (MINT, AWC, ERW, AOT).
4) Trading idea: for risk takers 1) stocks scheduled to release 4Q24 earnings next week and expected to grow YoY and QoQ – AOT and MINT; and 2) stocks expected to raise dividend payout, or undertake a share buy-back as PBV < 1x with high liquidity – PTT, KBANK, BBL and KTB.
Daily top picks
ADVANC: A defensive stock with steady profit growth. 1Q25 profit is expected to be strong, and 2025 profit is expected at Bt38.5bn, growing 10.5%. There is upside to profit from the upcoming license auction. It is paying a dividend on 2H24 profit of Bt5.74/share (XD on Feb 20), dividend yield of 2%.
AAV: A short-term decline in oil price will be a catalyst. Although 4Q24 is expected to show a loss of Bt455mn from unrealized FX loss of Bt1.6bn, excluding that shows a 4Q24 core profit of Bt1.2bn, up 20%YoY and shooting up from Bt57mn in 3Q24.
