Global Small Cap
Daily top picks
Limited recovery, no catalyst
The SET is expected to rebound after a sharp fall yesterday. However, with no new catalyst and low economic growth vs the region limits recovery to resistances at 1265 and 1272; support is between 1245-1250. A fall below support would send a negative signal.
Today’s highlights
• NESDB reports 4Q24 GDP growth of 3.2%, higher than market expectations, with full-year 2024 growth at 2.5%. 2025 growth is projected at 2.3-3.3%, supported by higher government spending, tourism recovery and export rebound (including digital wallet impact). It advises monitoring US policies and household debt levels.
• The NESDB believes the Thai economy has good growth potential if government stimulus measures are sufficient. It considers interest rate cuts as unnecessary at present, suggesting cuts be reserved for when needed and to avoid potential exchange rate volatility.
• The BOI says that Nissan is proceeding with investment in Thailand, consolidating production lines to improve cost management and preparing for new hybrid vehicle model production.
• The Excise Department is studying implementation of a salt tax, initially based on sodium content and harmful health ingredients. The first products being targeted are snacks and crispy treats.
• The draft Entertainment Complex Act has been revised by the Council of State and will be sent for public hearings until March 1 before submission to cabinet. The casino area will be limited to 10% of total space.
• Japan reports 4Q24 GDP (preliminary estimate) growth of 2.8% YoY and 0.7% QoQ, exceeding market expectations. This makes it possible the BoJ will cut interest rates to 0.5%, which led to yen appreciation against the USD yesterday.
• President Xi Jinping met with leading Chinese businessmen, reflecting increased support for the private sector. Attendees included representatives from Alibaba Group, DeepSeek, Huawei, Xiaomi, and Meituan.
Strategy today
In the short term, the SET is expected to recover, though upside is limited around main resistance at 1320. There are issues to follow, including the FOMC minutes, expected to pressure the market as the Fed chair has signalled a gradual cut in interest rate, and US manufacturing and services PMIs which are not expected to be good as the president’s actions are causing trade uncertainty. Domestically, the next two weeks will see the release of 4Q24 earnings. 4Q24 GDP grew 3.2% (with 2024 GDP growing 2.5%), showing continued recovery. GDP is expected to grow in 1Q25, spurred by stimulus, but it is too soon to adjust forecasts. Investment strategy is "Selective Buy".
Trading today
The SET is expected to recover but upside is limited. We recommend strategies across three themes with positive individual factors and two short-term trading ideas:
1) Earnings plays whose prices do not reflect the profit growth expected in 4Q24-1Q25 both YoY and QoQ and are generally are dividend payers – ADVANC, TRUE, AMATA, TIDLOR, MTC, AU and HTC.
2) Plays on stimulus benefits (Easy e-Receipt and Bt10,000 handout phase two) – Commerce (CRC, HMPRO, TNP) and tourism (MINT, AWC, ERW).
3) Undervalued stocks in SET100 with strong fundamentals that are expected to be targets of mutual funds and have low downside risk due to: 1) YoY profit growth in 2025, 2) strong financial position and possible share buyback, 3) low valuation with PER and PBV 2025F below -1SD, and 4) regular dividends - BCP, AP, PTT, TU and SPALI.
4) Trading idea: for risk-takers 1) stocks scheduled to release 4Q24 earnings with growth YoY and QoQ and expected to beat consensus – CPAXT, MTC, TRUE and CBG, and 2) stocks expected to benefit after MSCI rebalance. Recommend GPSC and SCGP, who have been included in Global Small Cap; be cautious on PTTGC and TOP, who have been removed from Global Standard.
Daily top picks
BBL: An expected raise in dividend payout is a short-term catalyst. Valuation is one of the most attractive among banks, trading at the lowest PER and PBV 2025F of 6.2x (peers at 8x) and 0.48x (peers at 0.8x). Quality asset risk is also low compared to peers.
CPALL: 4Q24 is expected to be the best quarter in 2024, growing YoY and QoQ from high season, strong SSS growth and higher margin driven by higher sales of high margin products. Additional stimulus packages and interest rate cut will bring upside to estimates.
