Global Small Cap
Daily top picks
Recovery is still limited
The SET’s improved trading supervision measure to build confidence and stability is seen as a short-term positive to sentiment, while the FOMC minutes signaled no rush to cut interest rate. The index’s recovery is seen to be limited at resistances of 1272 and 1280, while support is between 1245-1250. A fall below support will be a negative signal.
Today’s highlights
• The SET has adjusted trading supervision measures to enhance liquidity and boost volume: the Uptick rule will be applied on a per-stock basis, it has added restrictions on short selling and high-frequency trading is limited on SET100 stocks, and it has removed order duration limits. These are expected to take effect in 2Q25 and remain in place until 2026.
• The US president announced plans to impose a 25% import tariff on automobiles, semiconductors and pharmaceuticals starting April 2, with no specific details on target countries or product types. He is encouraging relocating production to the US to avoid tariffs.
• The FOMC meeting minutes from January 28-29 signal that the Fed is prepared to maintain interest rates amid inflation and economic uncertainty, with some members preferring to see inflation approach the 2% target before cutting rates further.
• The Deputy Minister of Finance said the ministry is accelerating consideration of economic stimulus measures to drive GDP growth to 3.0-3.5%. The finalization of the second ThaiESG fund for LTF investments is expected in 1Q25, which is hoped to help reduce capital outflows from the stock market.
• The FTI reports that the Industrial Confidence Index for January 2025 stood at 91.6, up from 90.1 in December 2024. This improvement is driven by export growth brought by rising demand from trade partners, increased imports for inventory stocking, a tourism rebound, and government stimulus measures.
• The Thai Life Assurance Association estimates life insurance growth at 2-3% in 2025, supported by heightened awareness of medical inflation averaging 8-10%, an extension of health insurance coverage up to 80 years, and the aging population trend.
Strategy today
In the short term, the SET is expected to recover, though upside is limited around main resistance at 1320. There are issues to follow, including the FOMC minutes, expected to pressure the market as the Fed chair has signalled a gradual cut in interest rate, and US manufacturing and services PMIs which are not expected to be good as the US president’s actions are causing trade uncertainty. Domestically, the next two weeks will see the release of 4Q24 earnings. 4Q24 GDP grew 3.2% (with 2024 GDP growing 2.5%), showing continued recovery. GDP is expected to grow in 1Q25, spurred by stimulus, but it is too soon to adjust forecasts. Investment strategy is "Selective Buy".
Trading today
The SET is expected to recover but upside is limited. We recommend strategies across three themes with positive individual factors and two short-term trading ideas:
1) Earnings plays whose prices do not reflect the profit growth expected in 4Q24-1Q25 both YoY and QoQ and are generally dividend payers – ADVANC, TRUE, AMATA, TIDLOR, MTC, AU and HTC.
2) Plays on stimulus benefits (Easy e-Receipt and Bt10,000 handout phase two) – Commerce (CRC, HMPRO, TNP) and tourism (MINT, AWC, ERW).
3) Undervalued stocks in SET100 with strong fundamentals that are expected to be targets of mutual funds and have low downside risk due to: 1) YoY profit growth in 2025, 2) strong financial position and possible share buyback, 3) low valuation with PER and PBV 2025F below -1SD, and 4) regular dividends - BCP, AP, PTT, TU and SPALI.
4) Trading idea: for risk-takers 1) stocks scheduled to release 4Q24 earnings with growth YoY and QoQ and expected to beat consensus – CPAXT, MTC, TRUE and CBG, and 2) stocks expected to benefit after MSCI rebalance. Recommend GPSC and SCGP, who have been included in Global Small Cap; be cautious on PTTGC and TOP, who have been removed from Global Standard.
Daily top picks
KTB: The stock price has a catalyst from the announced DPS on 2024 profit of Bt1.545 (XD on Apr 17) or 6.4% dividend yield. We also raise dividend payout ratio in 2025-2027 from 35% to 50%, which raises ROE by 20-28bps to 10%, as the bank raised its 2024 payout ratio to 49%, higher than expected.
BLA: There are several catalysts: 1) higher-than-expected 4Q24 net profit on higher investment gain, 2) 18% growth in 2025 profit expected on lower combined ratio and 3) attractive valuation after a 22% fall in price since Nov 2024. Recommend to buy for trading at not higher than Bt 20.40/share.
