Daily top picks
Trade war concern pressuring
The SET is expected to continue to slide after Trump said the tariffs on Canada, Mexico and China will take effect at midnight US time. A new concern is China’s counter tariff, raising import tax on agricultural products from the US. There is no new catalyst. Support is between 1180-1170, and resistance is between 1200-1205.
Today’s highlights
• OPEC+ decided to proceed with a voluntary oil production increase of 2.2mn bbl/day starting in April as planned, saying that market fundamentals and the oil market outlook remain strong.
• ISM reports a decline in US manufacturing PMI for February to 50.3, lower than market expectations, impacted by a drop in new orders and employment, as well as concerns over US trade wars.
• Trump confirms that US will impose a 25% tariff on imports from Canada and Mexico starting March 4 at midnight, with no exemptions for either country. The US will also begin reciprocal tariffs on all countries imposing tariffs on US imports from April 2.
• Chinese media reports China is preparing to retaliate against US tariff measures, which will impose an additional 10% tariff on Chinese imports starting March 4, by imposing tariffs on US agricultural and food imports.
• Watch for Trump’s speech to Congress on March 5 (09:00 AM Thailand time), his first address to lawmakers and the American public since taking office.
• The Cabinet approved a central budget of Bt153mn for the Maha Songkran World Water Festival 2025, as proposed by the Ministry of Tourism and Sports. The event is expected to attract over 800,000 tourists and generate Bt3.2bn.
• The Minister of Finance reported progress in economic stimulus discussions, dividing plans into short-term measures, such as accelerating budget disbursement and investment projects, and long-term strategies, including industrial and agricultural reform under a sandbox model and energy price restructuring. The detailed plan is expected to be finalized within two weeks.
Strategy today
In the short term, recovery is limited by concerns over local political stability and slow GDP growth compared to neighbors. However, in terms of valuation the SET PER is between 12-13x which seems high compared to the region, but Thailand is seen to have a larger proportion in the service sector than others. The US economy is still strong although there are signs of a slowdown; the economy is supported by expectation of interest rate cuts by the Fed and ECB, which is expected to cut its rate by 25bps to 2.5% this week. China’s economy is still being supported by stimulus. Investment strategy is "Selective Buy".
Trading today
Domestic and trade war concerns are limiting any recovery of the SET. We recommend strategies across three themes with positive individual factors and two short-term trading ideas:
1) Undervalued stocks in SET100 with strong fundamentals that are expected to be targets of mutual funds and have low downside risk due to: 1) YoY profit growth in 2025, 2) strong financial position and possible share buyback, 3) low valuation with PER and PBV 2025F below -1SD, 4) regular dividends and 5) SETESG Ratings of A-AAA – CPALL, BDMS, MTC, MINT and BTG.
2) Dividend plays: 1) statistically, have paid dividends for 20 consecutive years and have SETESG Ratings of A-AAA, 2) dividend yield expected at 4% (excluding interim dividend) and payout ratio stable or rising and 3) strong profit in 2025 and upside to price of greater than 15% – AP, KTB, BBL, PTT, SPALI and KBANK.
3) Earnings plays whose prices do not reflect the profit growth in 1Q25 and are generally dividend payers – ADVANC, TRUE, AMATA, TIDLOR, MTC, AU and HTC.
4) Trading idea for risk-takers: 1) stocks benefiting from cyclic downtrend in interest rate – REITS (LHHOTEL, DIF), commerce (CPALL, CPAXT), property (AP, SIRI), banks (TISCO, KKP), leasing (MTC, TIDLOR) and utilities (GULF and GPSC) and 2) stocks benefiting from positive sentiment from Opportunity Day – CPALL, BCP, AMATA, KLINIQ.
Daily top picks
BDMS: Seen as a safe haven in a volatile market, with profit showing steady growth. 2025 profit is expected to grow 8%, while the stock is currently trading at a 2025F PER of 21x, lower than -2SD of 10-year average, most attractive among peers.
MTC: The stock has a short-term catalyst from the interest rate cut. 2025 profit is expected to grow 17%, supported by loan growth of 13%, with NIM falling 17 bps and credit cost falling 21 bps. Valuation is attractive as the stock is currently trading at a 2025F PER and PBV of below -2SD.
