Daily top picks
Div. Yield 4.4%
Pressure eased, recovery continued
The SET is expected to continue to recover as pressure from Trump’s tariffs eased. It is also brightened by hopes the Fed will cut interest rate plus dollar weakening and baht appreciation that will bring fund flows back. Support is at 1200-1190, while resistance is at 1215-1225.
Today’s highlights
• China unveiled its 2025 economic stimulus plan, targeting 5% GDP growth via increasing its budget deficit to 4% of GDP, the highest in four years, and boosting government spending via special bonds worth 1.3 trillion yuan and allowing local governments to issue new bonds worth 4.4 trillion yuan.
• Pressured by the Big 3 automakers, Trump has agreed to a one-month postponement of import tariffs on cars from Canada and Mexico, in exchange for expanded production in the United States.
• Trump’s speech to Congress highlighted plans for import and retaliatory tariffs, ending the Chip Act, viewing import taxes and the America First policy as ways to attract investment to the US, and resuming peace negotiations with Ukraine with positive signals from Russia.
• ADP reports US private sector employment for February increased by 77,000 jobs, below market expectations and the lowest since July 2024, while the ISM Services PMI rose to 53.5, higher than market forecasts.
• EIA reports US crude oil inventories rose by 3.6mn bbl last week, exceeding market expectations, adding pressure to crude oil prices, which have now fallen for four days on concerns that trade wars could hurt oil demand plus OPEC+ plans to increase production as scheduled.
• The Deputy Finance Minister will propose to Cabinet a revised tax structure for PHEVs using a progressive rate system, expected to be implemented in 2026.
• The JSCCIB says the economy faces high risks from the trade war while domestic demand remains fragile, emphasizing the need to address global trade changes, accelerate budget disbursement, reduce costs and enhance production.
Strategy today
In the short term, recovery is limited by concerns over local political stability and slow GDP growth compared to neighbors. However, in terms of valuation, the SET PER is between 12-13x which seems high compared to the region, but at the same time, Thailand has a larger proportion in the service sector than others. The US economy is still strong although there are signs of a slowdown; the economy is supported by expectation of interest rate cuts by the Fed and ECB, which is expected to cut its rate by 25bps to 2.5% this week. China’s economy is still being supported by stimulus. Investment strategy is "Selective Buy".
Trading today
Domestic and trade war concerns are limiting any recovery of the SET. We recommend strategies across three themes with positive individual factors and two short-term trading ideas:
1) Undervalued stocks in SET100 with strong fundamentals that are expected to be targets of mutual funds and have low downside risk due to: 1) YoY profit growth in 2025, 2) strong financial position and possible share buyback, 3) low valuation with PER and PBV 2025F below -1SD, 4) regular dividends and 5) SETESG Ratings of A-AAA – CPALL, BDMS, MTC, MINT and BTG.
2) Dividend plays: 1) statistically, have paid dividends for 20 years and have SETESG Ratings of A-AAA, 2) dividend yield expected at 4% (excluding interim dividend) and payout ratio stable or rising and 3) strong profit in 2025 and upside to price of greater than 15% – AP, KTB, BBL, PTT, SPALI and KBANK.
3) Earnings plays whose prices do not reflect the profit growth in 1Q25 and are generally dividend payers – ADVANC, TRUE, AMATA, TIDLOR, MTC, AU and HTC.
4) Trading idea for risk-takers: 1) stocks benefiting from a cyclic downtrend in interest rate – REITS (LHHOTEL, DIF), Commerce (CPALL, CPAXT), Property (AP, SIRI), Banks (TISCO, KKP), Leasing (MTC, TIDLOR) and Utilities (GULF and GPSC) and 2) stocks benefiting from positive sentiment from Opportunity Day – CPALL, BCP, AMATA, KLINIQ.
Daily top picks
AAV: It has a short-term catalyst from baht appreciation and lower fuel cost that will widen margin, while average passenger fare is being raised by the expanding international market. 2025 core profit is expected to return to normal growth of 9% after strong recovery last year.
BBL: Price is expected to recover, backed by an improving market, and BBL is our top pick in its sector, underwritten by the strongest balance sheet, highest loan growth and lowest quality asset risk. Valuation is attractive, while the stock is a high-quality dividend stock, paying a DPS of Bt6.50 (XD on Apr 23), dividend yield of 4.4%.
