Cov.

Daily top picks

Div. Yield 4.4%

Bad vibes

The SET is expected to decline as the trade war between the US and its trading partners heats up with tit-for-tat tariffs, further weakened by uncertain domestic politics. There is no catalyst to revive the market. Support is between 1150-1140 and resistance is between 1170-1175.

Today’s highlights

• IEA warns of an oil market surplus, forecasting global oil supply to exceed demand by ~600,000 bbl/day this year. The agency predicts global oil demand will increase only 1.03mn bbl/day, down 70,000 bbl/day from last month's forecast because of the trade war.
• EU imposes 50% tariff on US whiskey in retaliation to US steel and aluminum tariffs, prompting Trump to threaten tariffs of up to 200% on whiskey and wine imported from the EU.
• US February PPI +3.2% YoY and Core PPI +3.4% YoY, both below market expectations and slowing from January. Initial jobless claims for the prior week fell by 2,000 to 220,000, lower than forecast.
• The US Senate continues to work on a temporary budget legislation to avoid a federal government shutdown, which requires Trump's signature by today to prevent a shutdown.
• Russia agrees with the US proposal for a ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine but is levying conditions. Trump said Russia would face severe economic and trade sanctions if it refuses to accept a 30-day ceasefire agreement with Ukraine.
• The Thai Chamber of Commerce University expects Trump 2.0 policies will impact four export categories: steel, aluminum, vehicles and components, affecting GDP by approximately 0.3%, with growth expected to slow to 2.8-3.2%.
• The Thai Chamber of Commerce says the Consumer Confidence Index for February declined for the first time in five months to 57.8 due to concerns about the trade war and slow Thai economic growth, despite the support from economic stimulus measures.

Strategy today

In the short term, the SET is expected to have some recovery, driven by externals: expectation of a stimulus package from China after the Two-Parliament meeting and US and China inflation, which are expected to be unchanged due to slowdowns in purchasing power and energy price and will lead the Fed to keep interest rate unchanged. Domestic issues to follow are political stability, additional stimulus, recovery of Chinese tourists in April and conditions for transferring LTF to new ThaiESG, which will reduce outflow from the market. Investment strategy is "Selective Buy".

Trading today

There are signs of recovery in the SET, driven by hopes from factors abroad and government plans to add stimulus. We recommend strategies across three themes with positive individual factors and two short-term trading ideas:
1) Undervalued stocks in SET100 that are expected to be targets of mutual funds with: 1) YoY profit growth in 2025, 2) strong financial position and ability to service debt (interest coverage ratio >1), 3) low valuation: PER and PBV 2025F below -1SD,
4) regular dividends and 5) SETESG Ratings of A-AAA – CPALL, BDMS, MTC, MINT, BTG.
2) Dividend plays: 1) statistically, have paid dividends for 20 years and have SETESG Ratings of A-AAA, 2) dividend yield expected at 4% (excluding interim dividend) and payout ratio stable or rising and 3) strong profit in 2025 and upside to price of greater than 15% – AP, KTB, BBL, SPALI and KBANK.
3) Earnings plays whose prices do not reflect the profit growth in 1Q25 and are generally dividend payers – ADVANC, TRUE, AMATA, TIDLOR, MTC, AU and HTC.
4) Trading idea for risk-takers: stocks benefiting from positive sentiment from Opportunity Day this week –AU, TIDLOR, BTG and PTG.

Daily top picks

BBL: The stock is expected to be a target of the ThaiESGX fund given its SETESG rating of AAA and status as our top pick in the banking sector, backed by the strongest balance sheet, highest loan growth and lowest quality asset risk. Its valuation is the most attractive in the sector, and it is paying a DPS of Bt6.50 (XD Apr 23).

BDMS: A defensive stock in a highly volatile market and it is expected to be a target for the ThaiESGX fund given its SETESG rating of A. Profit is expected to continue to move up with 8% growth in 2025. Valuation is attractive, trading at a 2025 PER of 22x, lower than -2SD of 10-year average.
