Daily top picks
Div. Yield 1.9%
Some recovery but limited upper bound
The SET is expected to see some recovery but with limited upper bound. The market is watching for any new catalyst. Watch the two-day FOMC meeting and the meeting of the Thai Bankers’ association, expected to discuss a measure to inject money into the system and relaxing LTV. Support is between 1160-1155, and resistance is between 1180-1185.
Today’s highlights
• OECD has lowered its US GDP growth forecast for 2025 and 2026 to 2.2% and 1.6% respectively, pressured by Trump's import tax policies, geopolitical tensions and policy uncertainties affecting private investment and household spending.
• Goldman Sachs has reduced its oil price forecast, expecting Brent crude to reach US$71/bbl in December 2025 (down US$5) and average US$68/bbl in 2026, in view of the expectation US economic growth will be hurt by the trade war and OPEC+ plans to increase production.
• China's retail sales for January-February 2025 grew 4% YoY, exceeding market expectations, while industrial production and fixed asset investment grew 5.9% YoY and 4.1% YoY respectively, also higher than market forecasts.
• Bloomberg reports that global CEOs from companies including Qualcomm and Saudi Aramco are preparing to meet with President Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the China Development Forum (CDF) next week, along with Republican Senator Steve Daines, who will meet with senior Chinese leaders.
• The BoI has approved promotional privileges for four major investment projects worth over Bt200bn, including BEM's Bt109bn Orange Line electric train (Bang Khun Non-Min Buri (Suwinthawong)) and Bt90bn in three data center projects from Thailand (GULF, AIS and Singapore Telecommunications), China and Singapore.
• The Thai Prime Minister has called in representatives from the SEC, SET, and DSI to discuss the situation of the Thai stock market and progress on measures to build capital market confidence, emphasizing four key areas: "monitoring economic cases, adjusting trading criteria, managing free float issues, and law enforcement".
Strategy today
In the short term the SET is expected to see some recovery after a plunge of 16% YTD, the world’s worst performer, pressured by trade war concerns and no domestic catalyst. However, selling is expected to slow down thanks to ThaiESGX, which is expected to limit outflow from LTF, and brings hope of new inflow between May-June 2025. This week there are three monetary policy meetings in three central banks: the BoJ, FOMC and BoE. Stances of all are expected to remain unchanged. Investment strategy is "Selective Buy".
Trading today
The SET is expected to see some recovery as selling slows and ThaiESGX becomes clearer. We recommend strategies across three themes with positive individual factors:
1) Stocks expected to be targets of ThaiESGX: 1) 2025 profit expected to grow YoY, 2) strong financial position and 3) potential for steady dividends, with dividend yield in 2025 of at least 3%: of interest in SET50 are ADVANC, BBL, BDMS, CPALL and PTT and in the SET100, AP, BCH and BTG.
2) Dividend plays: 1) statistically, have paid dividends for 20 years and have SETESG Ratings of A-AAA, 2) dividend yield expected at 4% (excluding interim dividend) and payout ratio stable or rising and 3) strong profit in 2025 and upside to price of greater than 15% – AP, KTB, BBL, SPALI and KBANK.
3) Undervalued stocks in SET100 that are expected to be targets of mutual funds with: 1) YoY profit growth in 2025, 2) strong financial position and ability to service debt (interest coverage ratio >1), 3) low valuation with PER and PBV 2025F below -1SD,
4) regular dividend payers and 5) SETESG Ratings of A-AAA – CPALL, BDMS, MTC, MINT and BTG.
Daily top picks
PTT: There is a short-term catalyst from increasing oil price. The stock is also a potential target of ThaiESG funds, having a SETESG rating of AAA, and 1) 2025 profit expected to grow YoY, 2) strong balance sheet and 3) a regular dividend payer, with dividend yield expected at 7% in 2025.
CPAXT: Seen as a defensive stock, expected to show YoY growth in 1Q25 from higher SSS and margin. 2025 profit is expected growth is expected to be the sector’s strongest at 18%. Synergy after the M&A is expected to be clear in 2025-2027, while DPS on 2H24 is Bt0.53 (XD on Apr 8), yield of 1.9%.
