Daily top picks
Range-bound, waiting for FOMC
The SET is expected to be range-bound as investors wait for today’s FOMC meeting. The situation in the Middle East and politics are concerning, while trade volume is weak. Support is at 1165-1160 and resistance at 1185-1190.
Today’s highlights
- Trump and Putin agreed to an immediate 30-day ceasefire on energy and infrastructure targets in the Russia-Ukraine war but did not include Ukraine in the discussion. Immediately after the call, Russia carried out air raids against Kyiv.
- OECD forecasts global GDP will slow to 3.1% in 2025 and 3.0% in 2026 due to tariff barriers among G20 countries and intensifying geopolitical tensions, which will impact private sector investment and household spending.
- The Bank of Korea is concerned that its economy, Asia's fourth largest, is facing a sharper-than-expected slowdown, mainly due to weak domestic purchasing power and uncertainty from US import tax policies.
- The Finance Minister said that after discussions with the Prime Minister regarding former PM Thaksin's concept of buying public debt from the banking system, further consultation with the Thai Bankers' Association will be needed, but confirmed the government will not bear the debt burden or use budgetary funds.
- The Department of Energy Business reported overall fuel consumption in January 2025 at 157.56mn liters/day, increasing 2.8% YoY on recovery in tourism and service sectors, as well as economic stimulus measures.
- Today, watch the Bank of Japan monetary policy meeting amid uncertainties such as accelerating inflation, rising bond yields, yen volatility and concerns about a repeat of the Unwind Yen Carry Trade which led to a Black Monday situation similar to August 2024.
Strategy today
In the short term the SET is expected to see some recovery after a plunge of 16% YTD, the world’s worst performer, pressured by trade war concerns and no domestic catalyst. However, selling is expected to slow down thanks to ThaiESGX, which is expected to limit outflow from LTF, and brings hope of new inflow between May-June 2025. This week there are three monetary policy meetings in three central banks: the BoJ, FOMC and BoE. Stances of all are expected to remain unchanged. Investment strategy is "Selective Buy".
Trading today
The SET is expected to see some recovery as selling slows and ThaiESGX becomes clearer. We recommend strategies across three themes with positive individual factors:
1) Stocks expected to be targets of ThaiESGX: 1) 2025 profit expected to grow YoY, 2) strong financial position and 3) likelihood of steady dividends, with dividend yield in 2025 of at least 3%; of interest in SET50 are ADVANC, BBL, BDMS, CPALL and PTT and in the SET100, AP, BCH and BTG.
2) Dividend plays: 1) statistically, have paid dividends for 20 years and have SETESG Ratings of A-AAA, 2) dividend yield expected at 4% (excluding interim dividend) and payout ratio stable or rising and 3) strong profit in 2025 and upside to price of greater than 15% – AP, KTB, BBL, SPALI and KBANK.
3) Undervalued stocks in SET100 that are expected to be targets of mutual funds with: 1) YoY profit growth in 2025, 2) strong financial position and ability to service debt (interest coverage ratio >1), 3) low valuation with PER and PBV 2025F below -1SD,
4) regular dividend payers and 5) SETESG Ratings of A-AAA – CPALL, BDMS, MTC, MINT and BTG.
Daily top picks
BDMS: Seen as a defensive stock, with a catalyst since it will likely be a target of ThaiESGX, having SETESG Rating of A. Profit is expected to continue growing, 8% in 2025 and valuation is attractive, trading at 2025F PER of 22x, below -2SD of 10-year historical data.
KTB: The stock is a target of ThaiESGX, with SETESG Rating of AAA. It is a high-quality dividend stock, paying a DPS on 2024 of Bt1.545 (XD Apr 17), giving dividend yield of 6.5%. 2025 profit is expected to be strong with growth of 3.2%. Recommend to buy for trading at not higher than Bt24.
