Daily top picks

Weak support, high pressure

The SET is expected to decline due to trade war concerns after the US announced auto tariffs of 25% beginning next week as well as reciprocal tariffs. Be cautious of volatility from the expiration of TFEX today, which may pressure the market near close. Support is at 1180-1170, and resistance at 1195-1200.

Today’s highlights

• The Canadian PM announced retaliation against the US for imposing a 25% import tariff on cars and light trucks. President Trump threatened to increase import taxes on the EU and Canada even further if they collaborate to harm the US economy.
• The US Department of Commerce report 4Q24 GDP expanded by 2.4%QoQ, higher than the first and second estimates of 2.3%QoQ, driven by a 4% increase in consumer spending.
• The Cabinet approved a draft Entertainment Complex Act, which includes shopping malls, hotels, service establishments, and sports stadiums, along with a casino limited to 10% of the area. The draft is expected to enter the parliamentary review process by April 10.
• The Cabinet approved a draft amendment to the Securities Act, expanding the SEC's powers, including the ability to conduct investigations, file cases jointly with police and halt suspicious transactions before severe damage occurs, supporting market oversight and investor confidence.
• The Minister of Tourism gave an update on some tourism stimulus that is being worked on. This program aims to provide 1mn people rights to a subsidy of ~Bt3,000 per night. For major cities, the government is expected to cover 40% of costs, with 50% coverage for secondary cities. The rights can be used from May to Sep 2025.
• The government's economic team discussed strategies to address household debt totalling Bt13.6tn (90.6% of GDP) and tackle five types of bad debt worth Bt800bn. Strategies include extending home loan repayment periods and the government’s purchase of personal and credit card loans to manage them, aiming to address long-standing issues constraining the Thai economy.

Strategy today

In the short term the SET is expected to recover after factoring in most of the negatives, falling 15% YTD, underperforming world markets. China’s economic figures and stimulus are expected to support the investment climate, while central bank stances are expected to be more dovish and reduce the impact and volatility arising out of US tariffs that is damaging consumer confidence. Investment strategy is "Selective Buy".

Trading today

The SET is expected to recover after factoring in most of the negatives. China’s stimulus and signs of flexibility in US tariffs will support the investment climate. We recommend strategies across three themes with positive individual factors:
1) Stocks expected to be targets of ThaiESGX: 1) 2025 profit expected to grow YoY, 2) strong financial position and 3) likelihood of steady dividends, with dividend yield in 2025 of at least 3%; of interest in SET50 are ADVANC, BBL, BDMS, CPALL and PTT and in the SET100, AP, BCH and BTG.
2) Dividend plays: 1) statistically, have paid dividends for the past 20 years and have SETESG Ratings of A-AAA, 2) dividend yield expected at 4% (excluding interim dividend) and payout ratio stable or rising and 3) strong profit in 2025 and upside to price of greater than 15% – AP, KTB, BBL, SPALI and KBANK.
3) Undervalued stocks in SET100 that are expected to be targets of mutual funds with: 1) YoY profit growth in 2025, 2) strong financial position and ability to service debt (interest coverage ratio >1), 3) low valuation with PER and PBV 2025F below -1SD,
4) regular dividend payers and 5) SETESG Ratings of A-AAA – MTC, MINT, AMATA, BJC and CPF.

Daily top picks

TRUE: Our top pick in Communication. We favour TRUE over ADVANC as TRUE is poised to see higher upside from the spectrum auction and higher 2025 core profit growth than ADVANC. 1Q25 core profit is expected to grow YoY from a steady reduction in expenses and QoQ on lower marketing expense.

CPF: The stock is undervalued, trading at 2025F PER of 8.4x and PBV of 0.6x, lower than -1SD. 2025 core profit is expected to grow 24%, with 1Q25 core profit growing YoY and stable to up QoQ on higher swine price while animal feed cost is low, leading to higher margin.
