Daily top picks
MPC meets today
The SET is expected to be range-bound as the MPC meets, anticipating a cut, though signals are mixed. Progress in trade negotiations between US and trading partners and speculation on 1Q25 earnings are offset by pressure from Moody’s lowering of Thailand’s rating outlook to negative and lower oil price affecting Energy. Support is at 1160-1150, resistance 1180-1190.
Today’s highlights
• At 2 p.m. today, the MPC meets. The market expects it to cut policy rate by 25bps to 1.75% and revise down Thailand's GDP forecast. Currently, the market estimates GDP in the range of 1.4%-2.0%.
• Tonight, watch for US advance 1Q25 GDP, expected to fall from +2.4% in 4Q24 to +0.4%, and US PCE inflation, expected at 2.2%, not yet fully reflecting Trump’s tariffs. Once fully reflected, inflation is expected to step up.
• Moody's has downgraded Thailand's credit outlook to Negative from Stable, reflecting risks that economic and fiscal strength will weaken due to US tariffs. However, Thailand's credit rating remains at Baa1. We view this as a short-term pressure on the SET, hurting banking stocks and companies with high debt via potentially raising financial costs.
• The FTI reported March auto exports at 80,914 units, down 15% YoY, while auto production slid 6% to 129,909 units. This suggests 2025 production may not reach the 1.5mn unit target, which is bad news for the automotive sector (AH SAT STANLY NYT). We recommend avoid investing in this sector in the short term.
• The number of short-term foreign tourists increased last week, driven by Chinese and South Korean travellers entering holiday periods, while long-haul tourists slowed. Total tourist arrivals for 2025 stand at 11,841,911, up 0.12% YoY.
• Trump's task force is preparing to reduce the impact of automotive tariffs after concerns about disruption to the US automotive supply chain due to duplicate taxation.
Strategy today
In the short term the SET is expected to climb on expectations: 1) the MPC cuts policy interest rate by 25bps and 2) Trump eases his stance on tariffs, especially to China, with some real progress in negotiations. However, the uncertainty of US tariffs and the hit to the world economy may deteriorate confidence on the growth outlook for 2Q25 earnings, causing investment to continue with caution and limit the SET’s upside. Our investment strategy remains "Selective Buy".
Trading today
The SET is expected to move up on expectations the MPC will cut policy interest rate today and an easing stance by Trump on tariffs. At the same time, uncertainty continues to limit SET upside. Our investment strategy is for "selective buy" in two main themes and one trading theme with specific positive factors:
1. Earnings plays with profit expected to grow through 1H25 and core profit growing both YoY and QoQ – ADVANC, TRUE, BTG, CPF and CPALL.
2. Undervalued stocks with 2025F PER and PBV below -1SD, profit growth expected in 2025 and solid financially – GULF, MTC, CBG and SPRC.
3. Stocks expected to be targets of ThaiESGX: 1) 2025 profit expected to grow, 2) strong financial position and 3) steady dividends with yield of at least 3% - on SET50 are ADVANC, BDMS, CPALL and PTT and on SET100 are BCH, BTG and AP.
4. Trading idea: For high-risk-takers, we recommend: 1) stocks expected to benefit if the MPC cuts interest rate – REITs (DIF), Commerce (CPALL), Property (AP and SIRI), Leasing (MTC and TIDLOR) and Utilities (GULF and GPSC), and 2) safe-haven stocks expected to be shielded from the trade war even if it escalates – BCH, CPALL, GULF, MTC, OR and TRUE.
Daily top picks
GULF: Price has a short-term catalyst from lower bond yield. It is expected to be a target of ThaiESGX funds with SETESG rating of AAA. 1H25 profit is expected to be strong, backed by higher capacity. Acquisition of INTUCH will support the balance sheet, raise borrowing ability and lower financial cost in the medium term.
DIF: A defensive asset in a volatile market. Unit price has a short-term catalyst in the anticipation of a cut by the MPC in policy interest rate today. 1Q25 core profit is expected to grow YoY and QoQ. The asset also has high dividend. 2025 DPU is expected at Bt0.90, yield of 11%.
