BCH CPALL GULF MTC OR TRUE
Daily top picks
Continue sideways, expect to break up
The SET is expected to move sideways with no new catalyst. US is keeping tariffs on China at 55% which is higher than the previous base of 30%. The index is expected to break above 1145. If it can, it is expected to stick at resistance at 1150; supports are 1130-1127/1120. If the index falls below that, it will start a new wave of decline.
Today’s highlights
• The US is making Japan and South Korea its next trade deal targets and is preparing to notify certain countries about trade agreements within the next 1-2 weeks. Monitor for clarity on Thailand's timeline during this period.
• President Trump revealed the US-China deal still requires final approval from both presidents, with the US maintaining 55% tariffs on China and China implementing 10% tariffs on the US. China will lift rare earth export restrictions while the US will ease controls on advanced technology sales to China.
• Last night, WTI and Brent crude oil prices surged over 4% following reports the US was preparing to evacuate some embassy staff from Iraq due to Middle East security concerns. EIA reported crude oil inventories fell by 3.6mn bbl last week, exceeding market expectations.
• The US reported an increase in May CPI of 2.4%YoY and Core CPI rose 2.8%YoY, both below market expectations. This has raised market expectations that the Fed will cut rates for the first time this year by 0.25% to 4.00-4.25% in September, with another 0.25% cut expected in December.
• Elon Musk announced via X preparations to launch Starlink services in Thailand, with Starlink's Thailand status pending regulatory approval. Expect limited impact on existing Thai telecom providers (ADVANC TRUE) due to competitive pricing but high Starlink equipment costs.
• The Social Security Medical Board approved guaranteeing high-cost disease payment coverage at Bt12,000/AdjRW for the rest of 2025, extended from the previous 1H25 guarantee only. This is positive for profitability of hospital stocks participating in social security programs, BCH, CHG, and RJH.
Strategy today
In the short term the SET is expected to move sideways as there are many factors to follow: trade negotiations between the US and trading partners, especially China, India and Japan, political uncertainty (a cabinet reshuffle) and the effect brought by the calculation adjustment for DELTA to comply with the limit of a single stock weighting in SET50/SET100 at 10% starting on Jul 1. We believe the SET has already passed its critical point (downside of 1032), which reflected the worst-case scenario for US tariffs. We retain our view of an opportunity to accumulate if the SET falls to 1120-1100. Our investment strategy remains "Selective Buy".
Trading today
The many uncertainties are expected to keep the SET moving sideways: US trade negotiations, politics and SET50/SET100 index calculation adjustment. Our investment strategy is for "selective buy" in four main themes and two trading themes with specific positive factors:
1. Earnings plays: those with 2Q25 profit expected to grow strongly, and core profit growth both YoY and QoQ – ADVANC, TRUE, CPALL, BTG and CPF.
2. SET50 stocks with SETESG rating higher than A, with dividend yield of above 5% expected, and on which we recommend Outperform – PTT, KTB, BBL and HMPRO.
3. Stocks expected to be targets of ThaiESGX: a) 2025 profit is expected to grow,
b) financial position is strong and c) are steady dividend payers - ADVANC, BDMS, CPALL, PTT, BCH, BTG and AP.
4. Defensive stocks whose revenue is largely domestic. For risk-averse investors waiting for greater clarity on Trump’s tariffs – BCH, CPALL, GULF, MTC, OR, TRUE.
5. Trading idea: For high-risk takers who want to speculate. a) Stocks likely to benefit from passive funds reducing DELTA holdings to 10% and increasing others in SET50 – PTT, ADVANC, AOT, GULF and CPF and b) stocks able to recover quickly once there is progress on trade negotiations – AMATA, AOT, MINT, PTT, TU and WHA.
Daily top picks
PTT: Stock price has a short-term catalyst from the 4.8% rise in crude oil price, while valuation is attractive, trading at 2025F PBV of 0.7x (-1.5 SD) and PER of 7.5x, compared to 10-year average of 1.3x and 14.6x, respectively. 2025 profit is expected to grow 44% with high dividend yield of 6-7%. Recommend to buy for trading at not higher than Bt30.75/share.
BDMS: The stock is a defensive play and expected to rebound after a long decline, opposite to 1Q25 profit, which reached a new high. Profit is expected to grow YoY in 2Q25 on higher revenue and EBITDA margin but slipping QoQ on seasonality. 2025 core profit is expected to grow 8%. It is expected to be a target of ThaiESGX funds.
